Final Words

Posted May 8, 2001
As some of you have already heard Andrea and I are moving back to North Carolina. We were not even looking to move back, it was just one of those opportunities that we could not pass up. It is very exciting to get back home to family and old friends, but even with the excitement there is a bit of sadness having to leave all the new friends that we have met here and throughout this state as well as the neighboring states. I am not great with words or I guess you could say not very prolific, especially in such matters of the heart such as this, so I will try to make this short and to the point. I know, I can already hear some of you saying, "Too Late". The time we have spent in Birmingham has been just a wonderful experience for us. We are really glad that we got the opportunity to come down here. George Ward is probably one of the nicest golf courses I have ever had the pleasure to play. Was even a greater pleasure to be able to be a part of the improvements at George Ward. A lot or work has gone in to that course these past few years and it is hard to walk away from it. It has truly been a labor of love. For some of you this is probably good-bye, to others this is so long until we meet again at some tournament or other. Good luck to everyone and God Bless.

Break In at Cooper Green

Posted April 22, 2001
Well we have had our first break in at Cooper Green this past Sunday, April 22. DGB Member, Richard Brown, was parked in the circle near 18's basket. His driver side window was shattered with a rock and they stole his cell phone. The police were called and a report was made. Unfortunately no one saw who did it, so they are still out there waiting to strike again, so if you are going to park up there or anywhere at Cooper Green make sure that anything of value is left at home or is hidden in the trunk or under the seat or just take it with you. If you hear of any other thefts and or acts of vandalism please let me know so I can post it on the web to let other players know, so they can use caution when they go out there.

Tax Tourney 2001

Posted April 16, 2001
Wow! What a skins game. If you weren't there you missed some of the best disc golf ever played in Birmingham. There were two 4's on the 1400 ft. monster ( Yeah, 4's! ) to push the money to the next hole. No one ever claimed a hole, so Ron Russell, Todd Branch, Mike Young, and Cameron Todd all split the $225 purse.

As for the tournament, Ron Russell (1999 World Champ) edged out Todd Branch ( WinniCrew ) by 1 stroke to take the win.

You can find full results at the PDGA web site.

DGB Minutes

Minutes of DGB Meeting on Thursday, March 1, 2001

Club Business-

Welcome New Member Charlie Bragg. Renewals are due and are $10.00. New
Memberships are $20.00 and include a certificate for a free disc from Tom
Monroe.

Updated contact list is forthcoming.

Club Website Update - Fred Hallaman

Brian Moon has resumed his duties as webmaster for the DGB site (welcome
back Brian!). Our HUGE thanks to Bill Darnall who has done an incredible
job and has used a boat load of personal time. Check out the site if you
haven't seen it lately - the look has changed.

Casual Toss/Monthly Tournaments

Bob Satter reported a great turnout for the February Monthly - 17 attendees
and $30 made for the club for course improvements

March monthly will be held at the New Cooper Green course on March 17
(Happy St. Patty's!). To get everyone warmed up for the Tax Tourney, and
because we expect a few out-of-towners also showing up to get a feel for
the course before April, this will be a two-round tourney. Full details
coming soon. TD for the March tourney will be Fred Hallaman.

Cooper Green Course

Speaking of Cooper Green - The course has been designed (compliments of Tom
Monroe). Tees are currently marked by flags and baskets are marked by
stakes. Baskets will be going in the ground this week. Ultimately there
will be 3 sets of tees, Pro, Recreational and Children's. At least 2 (Pro
and Rec) will be used in the Tax Tourney

Lot of hard work has already been done, but there is a lot more to do.
This area has been dormant for many years and there is a lot of trimming to
do. All ideas for cutting, pruing, etc., should be filtered through
Richard Brown before they are done.

George Ward

As you know, the recent wind storm took a nasty bite out of George Ward.
Thankfully all baskets are in tact, but there is still a lot to do out
there. Please contact Fred Hallaman if you have any free time to help out.
He can advise what needs to be done. You can choose your time frame.

Tax Tourney

Kimberly Neuman is coordinating the sponsorship effort. She has the
official sponsorship form ready. Please contact her for forms and details.
It has been decided that 15% of sponsor funds will go to DGB to offset
tourney expenses and fund course improvements. The other money will go to
either the Pro Purse or the Final Four Skins Game. We are looking for
corporate and small business sponsorships. If you have leads, please
contact Kimberly ASAP. She can either guide you through the process or
follow up in your behalf.

Keith Bailey is coordinating print needs for the tournament.

Per Andrea Hallaman - the Advanced/Amateur player's package will include a
T-shirt with the Tax Tourney Graphic on it and a plush golf towel with the
DGB logo. Kimberly is in negotiations with her contact about pricing.
Awards will be in the form of plaques for the top Adv/Ams, plastic for
lower ranking Adv/Ams, and money for the Pros.

Per Tom Monroe and Kimberly Neuman - we have several good contacts for
media coverage of the April event as well as DiscTV.

Ron Pittman reports on Registration - Fred Hallaman test drove the online
registration and it worked great. All local folks should be prepared to be
hit up for a single hole sponsorship ($25) when they register.

We need non-playing folks to help with the Tax Tourney. Spouses,
non-playing locals, older kids of players are all welcome. Duties may
include acting as spotters for some of the more difficult holes
(particularly Cooper Green) or administration (verifying score cards,
setting up leaderboards, etc). Please contact Andrea Hallaman or Ron
Pittman. Ron is TD and Andrea is Asst TD. Each will be assigned to a
course and they will coordinate all volunteers.

Storm damage rocks George Ward Park.

Posted February 23, 2001
This is a big tree behind the newest placement on hole 2.
Just part of the tree on the left fell on hole 3.
This is hole 9. As you can see, all three trees around that straight placement are gone.
Hole 11. Fortunately the new tee pad extension was not damaged.
More on 11. This is a mess.
Looking back down the 11th fairway. More mess.
Hole 12 is very odd looking. I am not sure if any tree is completely gone.
More on 12.
The basket made it on hole 12.
More from 12.
Well one tree out of the way. Too bad.
Who knows what hole 18 will play like?!?

George Ward Park News

Posted February 20, 2001
There are benches now on holes 1, 3, 5, 9, 10, 16 and 18 in addition to the large bench/table on hole 12. DGB paid for the bench materials but a lot of hard work went into building these and putting these in. You have Richard Brown, Fred Hallaman, Randy Fortenberry, Ron Pittman, Tom Monroe and Keith Bailey to thank. Please do thank them.

Plus - it has finally happened. We have extended the tee pad on No. 11. The form was constructed on Saturday and the cement was poured on Wednesday afternoon. Depending on the weather it should be ready to play on by the weekend. You can still play on the original tee pad without any problems. Keep a look out for more improvements throughout the year.

Discounts for DGB Members

Posted February 19, 2001
Tom Monroe of IFO is giving a discount to all DGB members for discs. 2 regulars discs for $15 and 3 regulars discs for $20. If you want to purchase premium discs then add $2 more to each disc. Membership fee for entering DGB is $20, the fee includes a membership card and one free regular disc.

Can't find Tom Monroe at the course to purchase a few new disc, well don't fret there is a new place in town that carries his stuff. It is at the new Play It Again Sports in Hoover. Their address is 1694 Montgomery Hwy, Hoover AL 35244. Phone No.(205) 979-4742. It is right next door to the Circuit City. The store is new so they are not carrying a lot of disc selection because they don't know what kind of demand is out there, so when you go there ask for either Steve or Benji and let them know what kind of discs you would like for them to carry.

DGB T-Shirts

Posted February 19, 2001
We have some nice long sleeved navy blue golf shirts for sale with the DGB logo embroidered on them. Here's the shirt and the logo. The shirts are $20 each.

(Lone) Wolf

Posted February 19, 2001

Version 1

The Preparation: The game works on a rotation so you need to decide a throwing order. How you decide the order is up to you. Once you have completed that you then need to decide how many holes you are going to play. The number of people playing has to be divided evenly by the number of holes. If you have 3 or 6 players then you can play 18. Any other number you will have to play less or more holes. Example: if you have 4 players, then you will have to play 16 or 20 holes to make sure that everyone has been through the rotation. (My suggestion for playing more or less holes is this: if you choose to play less holes then just start playing the first couple of holes individually to kind of get warmed up then start the game on the appropriate hole so you will finish the game on #18. If you are planning on playing more holes, which 20 will be the most you will have to play, then start the 19th hole on #10 then go back over to #18, this of course only applies to people playing at George Ward, anywhere else use your best judgment)

The Game: You will start in the numeric order that you decided on earlier. The first player makes his shot, he then has the option to go Wolf , which means he will play his shot alone, or to go shopping. If he chooses to shop then he has the option of choosing any of the other players as his partner once the other player has thrown. So if the next person throws and his shot is better than the first player's then he can choose him as his partner. If the next player shot is not as good then he can still choose him as a partner or continue to shop. If the first player has not chosen a partner by the time the last player has thrown, the last player will automatically be his partner on that hole. So now you and your chosen partner are playing against everyone else. Which gets pretty interesting if you have a large group, such as 6, because it will be 2 against 4. Once you have a partner you can choose which of the two shots you want to play from. The other players who were not chosen then choose the best shot between them and they will all play from there. The next hole begins with the number 2 player throwing first and now the number one player throwing last, so now player 2 has the option of going Wolf or go shopping. The next hole player 3 starts and so forth and so on. The game is best played as a skins games. Meaning you decide how much you want to play per hole such as .25 cents. If both teams tie a hole then the next hole is worth .50 cents and so forth and so on. Try to have a scorecard when playing so you can keep track of who won the skin or skins. Scorecards should be available at the bulletin board on hole one or you can make a copy of one that we have on our site, just go to "courses" from the spinning menu on the top left corner.

Version 2

Follow the same guide lines in the Preparation of Version I. The difference in this game is that the person choosing a partner or going Lone Wolf throws last, so if he has not chosen a partner by the time it is his turn to throw then he becomes his own partner and the bet has now doubled. So if the hole was worth 25 cents and he looses, then he owes everyone 50 cents, but on the contrary if he wins the hole then everyone pays him 50 cents. If everyone ties, well I will leave it up to you how you want to decide that, you can either add 25 cents to the next hole making it 75 cents or just keep the next hole at 50 cents since the original cost of the hole was only 25 cents. That will just have to be a group decision. The stakes get a little higher in this version, but that also makes this version a little more interesting.

I hope that you will enjoy playing either or both of these versions of the game Wolf.
