McFarland Park Benefit/Preview Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010 (Florence, Ala)

The Shoals Frisbee Club (SFC) will host a benefit/preview tournament at the new McFarland Park Disc Golf Course in Florence, Ala., on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010. This will be a trophy only event to show off the new course and raise money for its completion. More info on entry fees, divisions, etc., will be posted before the weekend. This is an unsanctioned event at this time. Please come join us for 36 holes of disc golf on the newest course in north Alabama.

two very important questions. A) What are some of the distances on this course? I know its on an old ball golf course meaning it may have potential to be a pro's dream course. and B) what type of baskets does it have? Obviously you guys may not have all of them in the ground and need to use some temp baskets but I think we all know where I'm going with this one

Russ, it is the newest course in Alabama, not just North Alabama.

Jeremy, they're exact copies of the baskets at Veterans! I mean, why screw with tradition?

I thought I posted a photo from the course here, but if you missed it, there are 12 INNOVA DISCATCHER PROS in the ground. We have money for three more in hand and need money for the remaining three. IF we don't have them in the ground, we will use approved temp targets for the benefit and Spring tournament.

And yeah, they're an improvement over the Veterans baskets!

Thanks Tom. I didn't want to make a claim I could not back up.

Jeremy,
You'll like the distances on the holes from the pro pads. There are also am pads for folks who don't throw as far, like me. Water hazards, elevated mounds (old ball golf tee mounds), some trees, all make for interesting terrain and a potentially magnificent course. The SFC members are to be given a great big ATTABOY for their work so far. Don't forget your fishing rod with a net attached to retrieve discs from atop the lily pads in the water hazards!

Russ, I plan to be there. Will the old-fart am division players be able to use the am tees in this tournament? If not, I guess I'll need to double up on my glucosamine/MSM tabs and naproxen.

Excellent. Well if the weather cooperates (ie stays above 45 degrees) I will make a very honest effort to make this my first event of the year

Jeremy, will has distances on disc golf course review (google it) that were measured with a GPS. Most are close or within 20 feet. James Burton, Jack and some others measured the blue tees with a measuring tape but we haven't posted the new distances. Search for McFarland Park on disc golf course review.

Kerry, your question brings up a good point. How to play different divisions from some radically different pads without backups.

I played the course this morning. It might be the best golf course I have ever played. You do not want to miss any event played here.

Russ,
As I'm sure you know, the long-term weather forecast calls for showers the day of the Florence tournament. What's the course like now, after the snow earlier this week? Thanks.

I went by there 2 weeks ago and Hole #1's basket was submerged. When I say Submerged, the only part of the basket that was visible was about 4 inches of the top band. The front 8 were totally under water.

I plan to be there. I have at least 4 discs that were found in Creeks after the Athens Ice Bowl that need to be returned to their homes in B'ham. Who can help me get these back to their owners?

Well, I suppose the inaugural tournament for the McFarland course could be held at the Veteran's Park course if McFarland is still under water Or those who participate in the tournament at McFarland could play out of kayaks or canoes or belly boats

the water is down.. and it should be good to go next weekend.. I will say this, from the "short" tees.. the course measures around ~6400... from the long tees its ~9500. when the long pin positions are put in, it will be well over 10,000ft.

This isn't no wide open course either , you pros should love it. Just gotta play safe and you'll do fine.

Russ,
It was great to finally meet you and your friends yesterday at McFarland. Hope the weather holds for the tournament next weekend!

The Shoals area is very fortunate to have two disc golf courses less than 10minutes apart. Another good reason, in addition to the world-class fishing, for someone to consider retiring to the area.

Kerry, it was great to meet you too. I was telling James about you coming up so it was cool when you showed up. The tournament location was a concern for a while, believe me!

We played the front nine shorts after you left Saturday. It was soggy, but very playable. Bring your waterproof shoes, seal skin socks, Goretex, whatever. The ponds were down, but there was still some standing water. The ground seems to hold a lot of water there, probably the water table is high and it doesn't drain that quick. But we've all played in soggy conditions, right?

The weather looks good for the rest of the week and a high of 47-49 Saturday.

Come check it out!

Russ,
By the way, My wife Sara used to work at the Florence Times Daily back in the 70s & 80s. Her name was Sara Prater then, and she did two separate stints with the paper. She was the editor of the Women's section, among other things.

How about that! I didn't start working here until 1991. I'll ask some of the old timers. Weather's looking better for Saturday. ONly a 30 percent chance of rain and a high of 53!

I was planning on coming up, but I'm not having much luck with flu symptoms so wet and cold aren't going to work just yet, at least not for a whole day... looking forward to a future tourney though!

Trying my hardest to get up there. Is there anyone from birimingham going, that might have an extra seat, I can pay for some of the gas.
