Ok, after talking to a few people it seems like no one in B'ham is offically "in charge" of these so we can run and gun with it if the interest is there.
I've got two schools of thought. Both assuming bag tags should be a yearly fundraiser for the club.
1) We get some cheap tags for the rest of this year. If we order soon we should be able to have them available for half the year anyway.
2) We just wait until the fall to start working on them and get some nice ones for next year. I'm a big fan of the "utility" kind. IE. bottle openers, carbiner key holders/etc.
I think they should give some kind of value to the players. I know TK has expressed an interest in doing montly singles mini-tournaments. Perhaps when/if we do those or raise prices for doubles we could give a $1 discount to tag holders, and take the non-tag holders and give that extra buck to the club.
I'm curious to know how the real DGB guys feel....Joe? TK?

useful tags sounds neat, but they would still need to be cheap. You want the bulk of the money paid to go to the club, not paying for the "tag".
BTW, who is "the club" these days? I mean, is there anyone officially running "the club"? If not, I would assume that whoever ponies up for the tags would be in charge of the tag money and would be responsible for getting the money to "the club".

lol, valid question Brian. I've always considerd Joe and TK to be the head of "the club" as they are the local pro's and pretty much the (brief) time that i've been here they've been organizing the trussville stuff.
Point well noted on "cheap". I have a place I can get bottle opener style keychains, 100 for $80. My thougt was if we do option #1 we could get those cheapies and sell them for like $5. This would generate interest (for little investment) and the proceeds could go towards better tags for next year.
Next year I was figuring some nicer tags for less than $2 ea. cost. Sell for....$7 or $10 and go from there...

I would love to get some bag tag action going in town, seems like every other city has bag tags. Joe and myself have been talking about this not to long ago. Bottle openers were what we were talking about. Why do you have to wait, why not just start now, it is only spring time not even summer yet.

I think we need to start having a more active and defined club. We all know the people who are usually involved in events at both courses and I'm sure there's a master e-mail list out there somewhere and I think these bag tags will help make the club more of a club rather than just a group of guys getting together to thow occasionally.

Brian has a good point, the whole time I have been in Birmingham, the club has never been typically solid.
A few years ago, there has appeared to be a rift between players in the city who want to grow the sport. But I feel especially over the last year, that the dividing line has faded a bit. People will always have personal differences.
But if you look around at who comes out for workdays, who volunteers at tournaments, weekly doubles, past leagues, etc, you will see that it is the same core group of people.
From the past, DGB still has some left over dues/leauge money left over. It is in the trusted hands of Richard Brown, and has been for the past few years. He was the last named "treasurer".
Getting tags started will be a step in reestablishing a club. First what could be required is that you give your contact info when you buy the tags. That way you can be reached for workdays and volunteering for helping in tournaments and mini's.
Huntsville uses the tags as badges of membership. They have to renew every year at $25. While Birmingham may be a bit off that level, we can at least take the right steps to go there. Huntsville uses those dues money for course improvements. They just purchased a new basket to fix two at Mastin Lake, and intend on installing a cement tee pad on hole #1 at Brahan Springs.
But basically, whoever ponies up the money for the tags would be incharge at first. There are many people who I would feel comfortable with being in charge of that. Later, as we get a better defined stable of players who represent DGB, then we could start to elect officers to handle functions such as the purchase of course materials with club money.
Club mini's are a great idea. At least one singles monthly. Discounts to tag members, with all tags going into a hat for redistribution after the finish according to score. Many other clubs do that.
A great future is possible, baby steps must be taken first.

I'm with Jeremy on this, I think the bag tags would be a good start to getting a more definend club. Its natural for a club to go en ebs and flows. When i got to Birmingham they were deffinetly in a decline and in the last year or so it seems like there has been a resurgance. Now thanks to an awesome second course Birmingham has a chance to be a _real_ Disc Golf destination.
Lets get some tags and get this thing started. I have no problem going ahead with plan A, cheap tags for the rest of this year and a reassement in the fall for next calendar year.
I think any kind of tags for this year should have only two real goals
1) Spur intrest in next years tags (and pay for them hopefully)
2) Generate more interest in the club
With that said, here are the cheapest tags (beer openers) i could find. Cost = $90 for 100 pcs. ($25 for setup, .50c for each, .15 to add sequential numbering)

These are small so the wording would have to be brief..."DGB 2006 - #89" etc.
What do you guys think?

I like em, nice and simple and great for you beer drinkers 8-). To save space you could even just say "DGB 06 #1"

I like those. I say drop the year and just go with one color. DGB #1, etc.

The problem with dropping the year is that we want to sell new ones every year. Right?

I get the feeling most of you on this board are new to DGB within the last 3 years? Having two courses cures a lot of our problems. Everyone is clear that TK is the man at Trussville. We have not had a go to guy at GW for a long time. Lots of folks felt they had a stake in it. In the late 90s, we had a pretty decent group, the original DGB. Then I moved, Fred moved and Ron moved in about a 2 years time and it kind of went away. We went from weekly doubles plus 3-4 events per year to nearly nothing.
Sadly, I am not in a position to take on DGB or events. My time is consumed with work and 5 kids. I do miss it at times.
My one bit of advice: "We should" never works. If you want to see something get done, you have to be willing to say "I am going to do XYZ. If anyone wants to help, I would appreciate it." You will get more help that way than trying to organize a group by saying "We should do XYZ".

I think after his performance at the Golden George it should be clear that TK is the man....period. haha.
Thanks for the input Brian, good stuff. I do agree, every project needs a leader. DGB itself doesn't need one right now but all these subsets do require one person to say "i'm going to do this". The great thing so far is that everyone is helping when someone does this. Like workdays in Trussville, Kris' tournament, me starting this website, etc.

Thus the color. But, looking again, the year would probably fit no problem.

Yep, that is absolutely true. Saying we "should" do something is a good way to fish out other ideas and figure out disagreements and options. But when it comes to getting something done, ideas die in committee.
If someone has an idea to make Birmingham, DGB, Civitan, George Ward better....then do it.
How many people did I ask when I made #11 longer at GW? No one. I did ask few key people for design advice, but as far as getting it done......I just showed up with my axe one day and started hacking away. Now people love it, a committee would have hated it.

I'm just going to pull the trigger on this guys. I haven't heard any objections and its worth a shot!
Thanks Michael for the offer, you can support us by buying one of them. Or maybe even a couple to give away to friends, at tournaments, etc. :)
After I make my money back for these the rest of the money will go into the tags for '07. Hopefully that will lead to a lot of the money for '07 going into the club. Hey, its a start!
One more question before I order.....I've actually never _had_ a bag tag. How would attach them to your bag? Is the little key ring that comes on the bottle opener enough or is there another method? They offer those 4" ball chains, kinda like what you see the ben a ropes attached with at banks. I can get those for $.10 a peice.....
"Tiger"
05-05-2006, 11:04 AM
I think the ring itself would be fine. As long as you have a zipper on your bag you can attach it there.
Tim Keith
05-05-2006, 02:47 PM
you can just clip it on your shoulder strap clip if you have one.
Way to step up justin, i will make a sign to put up at GW if you want me to.
I think when a person buys one we should make a list on who bought it a nd what number they got just to see who it started with and to see where it ended up. Maybe have an end of the season event for bag tag holders only and award somthing maybe to the 5 lowest tag holders? Just a thought, but we shold do somthing for sure.

Thanks Tim...next time I'll see you we'll figure out a good way to advertise them. I wanted to talk to you about another doubles sign possibly too. Something stating how we were going to alternate trussville/GW
They're ordered now! I'm just waiting to get the proof back to OK it!

Cool, thanks alot guys.
Like i said, I'm just looking to make back some of my investment back then everything else is gravy for next year. I'd like to have at least $200 available for next years tags so we can be sure to get what we want. I'm hoping we can sell at least 40 of these and then give a few more away as prizes at monthly minis and to the local guys that play @ the Golden Jacket.
The grand total on this years was $98 (100 tags...probably more than we need this year, but it was the smalest quantity i could get on sale) . Can't beat that!
Justin L
05-05-2006, 06:34 PM
Oh....the lady didn't get the proof to me today so i'm not 100% sure on the design yet but it looks like it will be the the circle DGB letters (like the bumper stickers) 2006 - #89 or something similar.
They should be in by E.O.M.
And TK...yeah, i'm hoping we can do something for the top 5 (at least) tag holders. Even if its just something like a thorw-off for a USDGC Roc or something. I'll pony up.

I'm still waiting on the final proof, as soon as i get it i'll post it up here!
They should deffinetly be in before End of Month!
I'll carry them here for purchase through paypal, and hopefully some of our local plastice vendors will carry them for us. I've still got to do some marketing in that department :)

Justin, I'm not sure how the distribution of the tags is managed but if at all possible can I have #27 to start with...
Justin L
05-11-2006, 12:29 PM
I'm hesitant to even ask why you want that specific number, but no...I think the way we're going to handle it is we're going to put something over the number and you pick one randomly. Whatever # you get is what you have...until you play someone and take theirs of course. :)

I think since these are only for a "half-year" I'm going to let them go for $5. I'm hoping this will get enough people interested to pay $10 starting next year.
This year I'm just hoping to gain interest and get people used to the idea. I'll probably offer up a raffle of something (maybe one of the USDGC Rocs I haven't thrown) to cath their eye. And maybe some kind of something for whoever has the #1 at end of the year.
Next year I'm hoping we can get alot of interest and it gives the ability to do some cool stuff. Maybe a discount on monthly singles tournaments...a cookout or two...prizes, raffles, etc.

Just an update, I got a proof in yesterday and it didn't look quite like i wanted so they're going to make a few changes and get back with me today.
Hopefully they'll have it right this time and they should ship and be here within a week.
Service with this company has been lackluster at best, but considering the price I can't complain to much.

My plan is to sell these for $5 each to raise money for next years tags and to introduce alot of the local recs to this kind of thing.
The first official "bag tag challenge" will be on Saturday July 29th. At this point we will raffle off a 2006 USDGC Champion "Eye" Roc. Everyone who purchased a bag tag is elligible. I'll try to rustle up some CTP's as well (taking donations). Cost to play (if any?) is also up in the air, as well as location.

Does this sound right for rules?
1. The object is to attain as low a number as possible. Tags are numbered #001 through #100
2. Any tag may challenge another tag of a lower number.
Examples:
When two tags are present: It is up to the higher number tag to instigate the challenge. If the higher number tag player beats the lower number the players swap tags.
When more than two tags are present: Once the challenge is agreed upon by all players and completed the tags are put in a pool and redistributed in order of finish.
3. In the event of a tie the win goes to the lower tag number at the start of play.
4. It is mandatory to accept challenges on the card at any organized tournament. In some events a “tournament wide” tag pool may be established in which all tags go into the pool and are then reassigned based on finishing order. Doubles rounds are exempt from this rule, tag challenges may be made at the player’s discretion.
5. Only challenges during casual play may be refused.
6. All players shall abide by current PDGA rules.
7. You may NOT challenge another player unless you have your tag in your possession at that time.
8. Have FUN!

Randy just wanted me to let everyone know that TK deserves the #1 tag from the start.
I believe him, because in all honesty, TK proved he was the best disc golfer in Birmingham back in the end of April. No one has touched him since. I will probably by one for the cause, but unfortunately no one will be able to challenge me and visa versa. So I will take a higher number.
Justin L
06-08-2006, 08:59 AM
What, I don't get to get number one? Geez.... :)
I have the first 10 or so tags in my possession. I've put stickers over them so I don't know exactly which ones are which but i plan on holding those to the guys that have been involved with this. We all play alot together anyway, so it will be good for rotations sake.
I'm going to put up a "Top 10" or something similar on the website that will have the rank of the top 10 tags along with an email address that will allow you to send them an email challenge. (With permission from them, of course). It will also probably link back to this forum so that other people can discuss what tag they have/make a challenge.
I'm wiating to hear back from Tom if he is going to be able to carry them for us before i post a news story on the front page but I will be playing GW Friday after work (5:30ish) and will have the tags with me then. As well as at doubles Sunday.
