DGB has received official confirmation that we're ready to get started on Birmingham Metro's newest course! This project has been in the works for well over a year and has finally cleared the last few hurdles to start work.

With the land provided by the City of Hoover, DGB has been tasked with installing a championship level disc golf course at the "Inverness Nature Park". The Inverness Nature Park is a tract of land located only three miles south/east of the 459/280 interchange. The park is mostly wooded with a few open areas, rolling hills, and some water. Initial plans for the park include parking, benches & trash cans with future plans to include restrooms and a pavilion.
With the available land, we're expecting a championship level course that will play Par 60+ from the Pro tees! Initial estimates have the Pro tees at almost 8,000', for comparison George Ward is 5,600'! Am tees will be similar in length to George Ward but will provide additional challenges with wooded fairways and elevation.
DGB will be providing the baskets, signs, and course design for this project and we're going to need sponsors! Sponsorship opportunities will include graphics and other information on tee-signs and baskets. If you know of any businesses that would like to support our course in Hoover please let me know. You can reach me at justin@discgolfbirmingham.com or via cell at 205.531.8121.

What would it cost to sponsor an entire hole? (Basket and Tee sign) $$???

D.A.D., it's dependent on how fast we can raise the money and the availability of Hoover Public Works. If everything thing goes well, a July kickoff tournament could be a reality!
P.J., you rock man!
ChuckD, we're still finalizing the numbers. As soon as I have something I'll PM/E-Mail you.

That's it! This is a public park, so feel free to go down and check it out. We hope to have some caution tape fairways and pin flags to be appearing soon. :)

Awesome! that's right behind where I work. Are you guys going to set up a poll to pick the name?

How bout we just throw out names and then go from there. I don't know that any official ones have been suggested. If its in a public park already whats the name of the park?

Hoover Disc Golf Course?
Justin L
04-07-2011, 04:51 AM
A poll would be a great idea!
I think the official name of the park is "Inverness Nature Park".
We've thrown around Hoover Disc Golf Course and Inverness Disc Golf Course. I think I prefer including Inverness in the name because a)Hoover is a big area, Inverness is more descriptive b) Hopefully this won't be the ONLY course in Hoover for long!

I was also thinking something like Inverness Disc Golf Course. I like Indigo Park as well. Why'd you go with that Jebb? just random?

I like " Inverness". Its Scottish which makes it sound kinda golfy.
6 years of Industrial Design schooling has me constantly brainstorming, plus being an IT Director has my acronym skills on high alert :)

I like the poll idea. I think we take submissions through a certain time then list the favorites in a poll for everyone to vote on.

I grew up in Hoover and between friends, my folks and myself I probably know a few people who might be able to get some more help out of the City of Hoover. The price of putting in a course is probably a splash in the bucket compared to most of their public works projects. I don't want to step on any toes or come off all big shotty, but I might be able to help if anyone would like. Just let me know.

I could donate some stickers that we could sell for $5 a pop.

will they build bathrooms?
That's in the "Extended" plan. The neighborhood association is a little iffy about having bathrooms and a pavilion because of the vandalism issues associated.
circle4
05-21-2011, 06:06 PM
public bathrooms in a public park would require constant up keep and the possibility of becoming gay bath houses.

05-21-2011, 06:37 PM
also... I was thinking 100 blue stickers at $5 then do a limited run of 25 each in football colors for $10. That could be $1250.

they are just [img] file hotlinks to photobucket. I'm not sure if this site accepts hotlinks or not. I rarely ever see any pictures on here.
here are the links.

The colors looked a little off in photobucket, but they are all the respective registered spot pms colors.
Also, Supporter might sound better than Fundraiser.
If I get some positive feedback then I will do them. If not I will move along to something else.

you've got me. I've never had a problem using embedded [img] links on any forums before. The direct link might not work because of privacy settings. try this.

So now that it's getting close. When is the projected course opening date and projected inaugural event date? We're coming up on 2012 planning time between now and the end of this year and need to know to plan around the course opening.
Justin L

It's SOOOO close. I apologize for the lack of updates and photos, but I'll try to get some up in the next couple days. We've all just had our heads down working feverishly. I spent three hours out there with a pole saw after work last night!
At this time I'm still hesitant to give an exact completion date. We've had a few weather related delays with the clearing along the way that have pushed my "late summer" completion to "early fall", but I feel like we're within 30 days or so of having baskets/pads in the ground.
I'm scheduled to meet with the city next week to discuss how/where to pour tee-pads and place basket sleeves. If they are as quick to jump on that as they have been everything else we've asked for then we should be in good shape!
We've discussed with Academy that the "Grand Opening" event will likely not occur until early spring of next year, but the course will be open for play as soon as we can get the pads/pins in. I know everyone was excited for a big B-Tier this fall, but we really think allowing the course to mature a bit over the winter will make the tournament that much better! Plus it gives us time to finish all the "bells and whistles" like tee signs, bulletin boards, benches, trash cans, etc.
That being said, when does our state coordinater think a good "B-tier that's paying like an A-tier" should be scheduled? :)

I say wait till this spring to run an event, The course will need to be played to get it beat in some, may need a little tweaking along the way. You want it to be at its best before bringing folks in from out of town for a big tourny.

My thoughts as well. I'm sure we'll have a few DGB events out there to help get some play on it. :)

Why not make it an official A-tier? There is still time for that. TK is right about
"seasoning" the course before having a big grand opening event. Nothing breaks in a course
faster than a couple of local soft opening events to get a few hundred people through there.

A-Tier = 2 days. i don't know that I'm up for that commitment...heh. Maybe Year 2?

Yea a few unsanctioned events before the big event would be the way to go!
TK
Yes, that is the plan that was discussed at the club meeting. We plan on holding a few DGB club mini's at Indigo to help raise money for improvements at G.W., Civitan and Carter. Going to have a few workdays in the fall and winter and we need money to help pay for the improvements at the courses.

Word DB and TK!! We did discuss this at the meeting and that was the plan. Chris you should run a club mini for us out there if you are willing I am sure we will all help you ;). The first sanctioned tourney should and will be for Acadamy run by the club. Justin is working out the details. Should be a great opening for the course. I think it will be an EPIC course for this area.
