Greetings fellow DG'ers,
This is a HUGE shot in the dark, but I thought I would throw it out there anyway. I am going to be travelling over the holidays from my beautiful home course of Warwick, NY (a must play for anyone visiting the southern NY state area) all the way to Houston, TX. My non-DG friends can't understand why I don't just fly. Well, for anyone who'[s fondled plastic, the answer is simple. To play as many courses as possible. Right now my count is at eleven during my journey. So...Christmas Day finds me passing through Birmingham and Tuscaloosa. I got to get an early start so I am looking to play George Ward around 7 am. Is the course open this early (I know the park Warwick is in doesn't open until 9, but the DG'ers have the combo, so we can jump through that loophole). That's the first question. Next...is it possible to play a round in two hours? Question 2. If so, that will let me leave around nine and make the hour drive to Tuscaloosa and play Bowers around 10. And for the big one, question 3. Are there any "locals" available on Christmas day (go ahead, get your chuckles, chortles and gaffaws out of the way) to meet me at either course at either time to play a round? Lastly...is there any site where I can download and print scorecards and course maps of both courses? Thanks for all your help.

George Ward is open 24/7 so a 7 a.m. round is definatey doable. Its a fairly short course so a 2 hour round is more than feasable, even playing all 24 holes. I... a "local" will just be getting back into the swing of things coming off an unrelated sports injury, but would love to play a round, so for right now you can count on at least one other disc golfer being out there with you. As for scorecards, I think I've got a couple of extras that I'll try to remember to bring out with me.

Scott, that sounds like a good trip you have going. I play every Christmas but 7 is too early, I get out about 10. If things change I'll be out htere around 10.

Hey Scott, I just played the courses in Warwick about two weeks ago. Absolutely awesome courses! Winds gusting to 45 MPH made the tips a little hard though. There are two courses in the Birmingham area, the other being in Trussville, about 15 miles from George Ward. George Ward is a great course and is relatively open, with 24 holes. Trussville is more technical, and does not have a complete set of concrete tees yet, but the necessary ones are there. You can't go wrong either way!

Hey Scott, glad to hear you'll be getting a chance to play in the area.

Unfortunatly I'll be out of town over x-mas so i can't meet you out there.

I hope you're taking some great pictures on this roadtrip, you should put up a blog or something! I hope i have the opportunity to make a big epic disc golf safari like that one day.

So a buddy of mine has a test run CE-JLS that I want in my bag. In trade, he wants me to pick up a local stamped disc, like a Roc or Firebird, and a six pack of local micro brew from somewhere on my journey. Anyone lend a hand in aquiring these items for me?

...as far as a microbrew is concerned: The closest you're going to get in Birmingham to a microbrew are Bud Light Ponies. Unfortunately, due to Alabama's ancient alcohol laws (limiting alc %) we have slim pickings. Huntsville, AL has Olde Towne Brewery which is pretty readily available in Birmingham grocers. One of our local players heads up Free The Hops (www.freethehops.org) and would more than likely have some good stuff on hand.

what??? just go to vulcan beverage right around the corner from GW, a most excellent selection for our antiquated laws.

Alabama's only bottling brewery, Olde Town, makes decent beer that is probably no different from anything you'd find anywhere in the country. I would suggest picking up some Terrapin Wake n' Bake Oatmeal Coffee Imperial Stout while in Georgia or North Carolina. Sweetwater also makes a "Festive Ale" that is not available in Alabama, but can be purchased in Georgia and would be a unique treat for anyone not from the South. Both the Terrapin and Sweetwater breweries are based out of GA and make excellent beer. You can purchase Terrapin Rye Pale Ale in AL, or Sweetwater IPA, both of which are outstanding beers in their own right from Vulcan Beverage, as Jebb said. I think they are the "jewels in the rough" as far as "local" craft beer in Alabama goes.

Cutting trees, getting more organized, winning/losing... nothing gets a disc golfer more involved than a good beer discussion...

Rumor has it they played in 120mph winds with sleeting rain....

I don't know if it was 120 but the swirls of winds were definately coming from multiple directions even when it wasn't looking like sleet in 5 minutes....several of us made it out at various times of the morning....but if I heard the story correctly tonight redneck got to play a round with just Tiger.....so I'm assuming he got smoked unless he's a pro and thinks all B'ham golfers must be gods and knows our gw is heaven.

yes, I had the privelage of playing with our northern redneck. Very nice guy. Because of the craptastic weather, neither of us played very well. I ended up having some family stuff to do which I was only informed of like 4 days before the round, so I only played 9. In that 9 I think I shot around -1 or even and he was around even or +1. It was definately below my temp threshold, but golf on christmas is still golf on christmas
