We have had a great loss in the disc golf community, Greg Carter was killed in a car wreck today on his way to Orlando to work. for those who were friends with him please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Truely a great loss, i am just blown away, things like this shouldn't happen to people like him.

Though I've been out of the scene for sometime, due to unforeseen circumstances, I remember Greg Carter as a soft spoken pleasant person who always had a smile. He even helped contribute to my doubles few one Sunday afternoon.

Does anyone have any info on a viewing time or funeral? I think it would be great if as many as the disc golf community would show up and just "love" on Gregs family. Please let me know as soon as possible what info you have. Thanks

So sad, I had the pleasure of playing in a lot of groups with Greg as he made his way up through the amateur ranks and on to pro, great guy, class act. The disc community won't be the same.

If anyone would like to go in on some flowers/in lieu of from DGB, let me know.

Oh man, I think we drove by this wreck yesterday. We were heading back from NC via Atlanta. The wreck was pretty far off the road, all you could see were emergency vehicles. There were a few blinding rainstorms we ran through between Atlanta and Birmingham, it was a bad day to be on the road.

I'm so sorry to hear that, Greg was a great guy.

I played a round with him at GW about a month ago. I believe he was getting married in a few months too.

Justin, I'll be glad to go in on some flowers with you, just let me know.

Greg was the first real golfer to get started playing Hartselle back when the course first opened. He was always kind to all the newbies and was willing to play with players well below his skill level in dubs without getting upset. Never once have I ever heard him say an unkind thing about another person.

He was super hard core about disc golf at times. Often he would play a round before the first round, during lunch at a tournament, and then play another round after the event! I was with him when he broke his ankle on hole 2's old tee pad at Hartselle. We waited around for 45 minutes or so for his dad to come pick him up as he couldn't drive back to Moulton. He wasn't concerned so much about the obviously broken ankle, he just wanted to get back to golf. And he did, while wearing a cam walker (those goofy boots ankle and foot fracture patients have to wear). He would hop onto the pad and throw sidearm, scaring the stuffing out of me.

A lot of people didn't know how great of an athlete he was. Just looking at him, you wouldn't have known it. He went so far as to play college basketball. A major accomplishment indeed for a slow (reletively) short guy.

I read somewhere that you can measure a man's luck by how many friends he had. If so, Greg was lucky. But sadly, I think he was one of the most unlucky people I have ever met. Odd occurances seemed to dog him. Whether it was breaking his leg on a tee pad, an unlucky roll, or well this thing that just happened, he couldn't seem to catch a break.

In the past year, MJ and I had grown apart a little from Greg. He was working out of town and wasn't able to make Tuesday dubs. We also found ourselves on sort of opposite sides of the great cataclism that hit H'ville last year. He never once said anything negative to me, but I would be a liar if I said there wasn't some tension. I would also be a liar if I didn't admit that I was probably to blame for it. This morning I woke up feeling nothing but regret. Yesterday came like a thief in the night, and it caught me unprepared.

Here's where you can drop off if you're easily offended (how sad is it that this might offend you), but I think Greg would appreciate this last bit most of all. While I am very sad today, it's a selfish sadness. Greg no doubt has left us here, but I have no doubt I'll see him again. I know Greg to be a Christian and therefore to be in a much better place. And all those great things he did for me and his other friends, for the students like Matthew Gardner he inspired as a teacher and a baskeball coach, and for every random person he helped along the way he'll be rewarded.

Anyway, we'll miss him in Hartselle.

Josh

Will do, Randy and myself were talking and as much as greg loved disc golf we thought it would be good to start a fund in honor of Greg Carter to be donated in his name to the Al. Disc Golf Championships. Especially since it is in athens on the course he help put in, he was very proud of that course!

Any little bit helps, whatever you can give, maybe Tom could take up collections at GW and i will take care of Tville. I will pass this on to the other clubs, so they can get on board. whats everyone think, is this a good idea?

Would it be out of place suggesting the new Trussville course be dedicated in Greg's memory?

Maybe we could start it this Sat.? Would Gregg like those $'s going into the general Open fund or maybe to the highest player who joined the Open this year?

Yeah I was thinking that too. He was such a great representative of discgolf. Never a bad word. Always a joy to have him in your group.

Tom, to answer your question, I believe he would want it to go to the general Open fund. Greg was not a fan of gimick payouts, he had been known to not move CTP flags when he was closer.

I was thinking more of a reward than a gimmick. Just an idea to help players consider moving up. I know Gregg moved up by hard work and practice. That was the idea. Nothing more.

This is an unbelievable loss. I am just finding out about this and I am floored. Greg was one of the best people I have come to know through disc golf. We kind of paralleled each other on our move up from advanced to playing with the big boys. Greg was a great person and a great competitor. One of the best ambassadors for sportsmanship... he played and lived the right way. We had some great battles and I was so proud to see how he had stepped up his game to be competitive at big tourneys. To say he will be missed feels like an absurd understatement.

Greg and I were very close. We understood each other in a way alot of other people couldn't.

Silence was a sign of respect and admiration. Especially on the course. You could go an entire round in a tournament and not here a sound from him. He wasn't upset, just focused. Sometimes you couldn't get him to talk until you were off the course.

Of course sometimes he wouldn't stop talking either. Usually because he was joking or messing around with you.

Greg perceived things differently than most. He would be upset at times when he cashed because he thought they paid out too deep. How many people have you ever heard do that?

It makes me laugh when I think about the word "gimmick" relating to things like CTP's and payouts. He used those terms to express his idea about reward for hard work, effort and skill. I don't know how many times he referred to one of my hole designs as gimmicky. Usually it was on the hole that I thought was the least "gimmicky". It made me laugh inside and sometimes outside when I would just look at him and tell he was about to inform me about what I did wrong. Tom, you are absolutly right, he moved up by hard work and practice.

For those that may not know, Greg was the first TD of the Alabama Disc Golf Championship and it was his idea along with Lavone, Bill and myself.

Greg was looking forward to this tournament. He was hoping "Glass wouldn't mess it up" :>)

Well Greg, I will try my best my friend.

68 players + staff observed a moment of silence for Greg today at the Masher tournament, many thanks to Randy Fortenberry for his kind words.
