whats with the tape around certain trees on holes 10, 11, 18? are they to be decimated?
No worries, check this attachment.

The orange tape is roughly marking out a large circle in the middle of the 10, 11, 12 area, with 18's tee somewhat within, where we hope to soon start building up the soil for the new seedlings to be planted in October. In addition, we hope to do some erosion control efforts in the big wash area in 12's fairway. The tape is to let volunteers know where to start placing some of the brush when we're not there to show them. Please bear with us on this as it will be a work in progress, and we will work out the problems or issues as they arise. We will be trying to keep the actual fairways clear.

This Saturday is tree planting day. Over 100 trees will be planted as part of the re- forestation project. We need all disc golfers to help with the selection of planting areas.
We might need some post hole diggers, shovels etc. Maybe Bob can add a little more here?

Well, weather permitting, Henry Hughes will come out tomorrow to mark the tree positions with little red (or orange?) flags, and the idea is to stay out of the fairways of 10,11, 12 and 18, but there may be some goal positions where trees will be pretty close, so if anyone can be around to help judge that fine line, then that would be good. Once the flags are placed, on Saturday we'll just need hearty young folks with big arms (like you get throwing discs) to dig holes and plug the trees in, and also we may begin some clearing out of the invasive species like privet , so some pruning cutters may be handy. Then we'll just need everybody to get good and throw straight and try not to oddjob the little buggers.
Hopefully each planting will have something surrounding it to protect it?

They are talking re bar or something similar. WE could use about 10 golfers to keep them honest.

While I said something about rebar being necessary to protect the trees, nothing like that has been planned yet; in fact ,very little has been planned out to ensure the success of this project, and I suppose we are going to need a lot of trust and faith to keep everyone honest.

If you are reading this Sat. morning, come on out and help. We can play after lunch.

If you did not come out this morning, then don't complain about where all those 100 tress went. Thanks, to Bob for all his work. Even Officer Kerry showed up for a little water work.
I was planning to make it, but ended up pulling an all-nighter with a little server emergency. Haven't seen the results yet, but hopefully some sort of simple barrier around each tree is in the works.

My motorcyle ride to Florence yesterday after the visit to GW was a bit on the nippy side:eek:; however, today's ride home was great. Turned off the heated grips when I reached I-65.:D

Looks like the leaves , branches and mulch are adding up. If anyone ses a truck full of leaves, etc., heading up towards 11, please help them find the right spot to dump. That would be near the little flags between the fairways.
Someone left a bunch of leaves on the fairway near the target.
No new saplings up there! We are trying to grow grass there and we don't need any more leaves hiding our discs. Help them out if you can.

Please bear with us Tom, the point of the leaves at the top of the hill is to allow them to wash down the hill onto the eroded hillside in 12's fairway. Granted , before they settle they can hide a disc, so everyone needs to watch where they throw more carefully. One of the key aspects of the reforestation effort, though, is to allow the area to revert back to a natural growth, to enable topsoil to be built up enough so that an acorn that falls from a parent tree can root and grow; it involves more than just the trees we planted. Unfortunately, there really isn't a place for grass in this picture, as grass would be mowed (along with any seedlings).
In the area of 10, 11 and 12 and 18, it really is going to take the cooperation of all the disc golfers to make this work, because the only other options would be to close the area or give up the reforestation effort. Please accept the fact that over the next 5 years this area will be growing up some and creating new challenges for the players, and lets try to adapt to these changes. Thanks.

Bob, let's look at the area on 11 next time you are out there. I'm sure we can make it work.

Thanks; basically we are just asking for patience as the bags of leaves that are brought in settle and flatten out; it shouldn't take too long. They will rot and leave good organic matter behind. Also remember that we're not trying to create a jungle there; part of the plan, as you may recall from Henry Hughes talk, is to go in and eliminate invasive species such as privet and mimosa, etc. and hopefully we can start on that this spring.

Why don't you mulch the leaves first before speading them out, this would speed up the hole proccess wouldn't it?

Good idea, and that was done some; we'll try to do it more in the future, but we're just a small number of people and it's not always logistically possible. Thanks.
This is in no way aimed at the Dr since we all know the amount of time he puts in to GW.
The rest of you need to learn from his example.
Seems to me that you guys are complaining about the work others are doing to mitigate the damage done by disc golfers.
If the disc golfers want to see things done in a way that does not negatively affect the course then get your butts out there and do some of the work.
Show that you are there for more than just the fun aspects of being at GW.
One simple thing that all of you could help to do is install landscape stakes by the new trees.
You can get a bundle of 24" stakes for less than $15.
Place them on the tee side of each new tree to protect it from walkers, mowers and worm burner shots.
If half the trees make it to 24" then there is a chance of the reforestation doing some good.

where is a good place to get stakes bill?

I'm not the Bill you were asking, but any place that sells lumber will have stakes. They typically come in bundles of 25.
