Isn't Joe also our inside line to Red Mountain Park as well?

Yep, he's got some ties and I've also made some friends with RMP folks. It's just a waiting game with them.

On a side note, I heard some rumors of a course in Hamilton, AL. Can anyone confirm?

I have a friend at the city who is over special projects.

Has there been a formal effort to put together criteria for areas/land that make a good coarses and are fairly easy to develop into a course (private land, city land, county land)? Then it's just a matter of identifying several locations then pitching it to the city and see which ones fly.

The city gets a lot of bang for their buck with disc golf courses. For what they spend to refinish one tennis court they could have several complete disc golf courses.

What city?

city of birmingham, but I'm friends with a city council person in homewood and know some folks in hoover to. I think a disc golf park would be an easy sale just because of the low price tag associated with it, not to mention it's a growth sport and transcends demographics better than many other sports.

Well pass some names/numbers along to us! I've been trying to sell a disc golf course to the city for 3 years!

It would be really nice if people would use your name, this isn't a CB radio!

I would assume you already have some names and numbers, you might have even had the right ones... that's just not how the city works. It's more about finding the right person to get on board with your project and what having more disc golf courses means for the city. Actually, right now I would say you have a very good person running the city for the purpose of opening courses. You might not like Larry, but if building a few top end courses could get birmingham national exposure and possibly a world championship or something he would be all over it.

it's a matter of figuring out what motivates the people you need motivated then exploiting it for your own good. you gotta love politics.

I really would like to help. what areas have you thought about or tried to push for a course? Red Mountain Park is a little ways off. To be honest I know almost nothing about what areas are the easiest targets. Tom said cities are easier to deal with than private property and that would make since, plus they have money that is already designated for parks and rec.

you give me a little direction and I'm willing to help in any way that I can.

cooper green and bradford park are the to most logical choices for sure.
cooper green is one awsome piece of land not being used for anything, even though it's not in the best of area's.

Disc Golf has decreased criminal and subversive activity in many areas just by increasing the amount of people around. Criminals and deviants tend not to do their deeds where they can be seen.

I bet you could have said the same thing about GW before Disc Golf arrived there.

the thing with cooper green is you need to park up by the community center and not down in the lower area where it is a little more hidden.
start hole 1 up top, less likely to have problems with cars parked up top.

coo coo cooper green. i think around first of oct/whenever the weather cools we should plan another gorilla sunday doubles out there. it was a roaring sucess last time. i have a dream that one day in the hood little white and black children will throw disc on one course.

I think instead of just talking about the course we need to just get more proactive and come up with a definitive game plan if we truly want that land. we could hold a tournament (not necessarily PDGA, maybe SN) and invite the community, local officials, are "beloved" mayor and any others you can think of to come see what we're talking about.

It seems like we get the "lets build a new course" bug every couple of months but we haven't made progress. I think actually showing people what we're talking about instead of only talking and showing stats might garner more interest. And I think if we include the neighborhood our chances of getting that land (or any for that matter) will be greatly enhanced.

It would be nice for someone to take over my position as P&R liason. I just don't have the time anymore and to be honest I was getting very discouraged.

Jeremy, I understand your comment wasn't meant as a dig, but people HAVE been talking and trying to get a course. I personally have been to 30+ monthly meetings and have had at least 6 sit down meetings with Melvin Miller. Without the support of the community I'm just "one guy" showing up.

"Tiger"
06-26-2009, 03:12 PM
lol, sorry bout that justin. It wasn't supposed to be a dig. Really I was just commenting on how the topic of CG keeps being brought up, mainly just because people don't come to even our club meetings and wonder why its hard to actually take the next step in course development. I know courses are being looked into and for the most part we're as far along in each project as we can be and you regularly post about meetings you've attended. I do still think a well publicized event at CG could give us that little extra boost we need to get a course put in.

I just put in a 9 hole Rec course in Jacksonville. Hopefully an 18 hole Pro course will happen in the fall. Hoover, is 10 Million behind the budget they should have right now.
It is getting worse for cities , not better.
The biggest course in Orlando has been there while the neighborhood has gone downhill. There are even two courses in Barnett Park now. You do not play the holes in the NE corner of the course in the late afternoon unless you are packing!

Tom,
you obviously haven't played down there in a while, randy and myself played there 4 times in the last 2 months in the late afternoon, along with lots of other people with no problems at all.

great courses, well worth the time to play if your in the area, even if it's in the afternoon!

You could say the same thing about holes 11 and 12 @ GW as I have seen bullet casings out there ;-), though its admittedly much better these days.

I'm having some bad luck in that department myself, but not at the disc golf course.

Last Friday night at 2:30am someone kicked in my girlfriends front door while we were sleeping. I'm guessing he saw her giant wolf hound laying in the living room and got the hell outa dodge.

Yesterday I parked my car in front of the church/daycare at the corner of Lakeshore and Greensprings to go run on the lakeshore trail. When I came back my ipod had been snatched from my car.

A pistol permit can be had for under 20.00. Anyone with a "clean" record may obtain one.

Jefferson County pistol permits were $7.50 when I got mine renewed last year. I'm a firm believer in gun control, by the way. Gun control to me is placing your shots where you want them to go!

Where is the 9 hole course in Jacksonville, located? I'm
new to this game, live in Pell City and we tend to go to trussville, al to play. Are there anymore local courses around. If so please share, I want to get into this.
Thanks

doubt it....what efforts are being made?? I haven't heard of any.

read toms post "new secret course" we went to three different places over the weekend to set up small temp courses and promote new courses. they may not all be directly in birmingham but they arent too far away. The furthest one was probably just past Gardendale.

The efforts are being made. hopefully, if we keep shooting for multiple sites, one or two of them will bite.

The 9 hole course in Jax is located behind the Rec Center that has a public swimming pool. Down the street from the old underwear factory if that helps. If all else fails. call the parks dept. It is short. Birdies are just waiting for you. Tell more people in Jax. It is still a secrete up there. They are watching the traffic to see if they want to put in a larger course. The more that play , the better.
