Next 'Friday Night Flights' event planned for Friday the 13th!

Players meet Fri Oct 13 @ 7:45PM and we'll get started @ 8:00. Glow sticks will be placed on all 24 baskets just prior to dark. This will be a casual and unofficial singles event only; we may attempt a doubles event around Halloween.

GENERAL INFO:

*Please stay in groups of 3+ for general safety.

*Be sure you either have glow disc(s) or 1.5" LED lights to tape on your candy discs, otherwise you WILL NOT want to play @ night. Tom Monroe has candy discs available in the mobile pro shop, but a limited glow disc supply. I'll have some lights for sale the night of the event. Scroll down in this post for links to night golf resources.

*Bring a flashlight or headlamp. Whereas UV (blacklight) or glow sticks are preferrable to preserve night-vision, white light is acceptable - depends a lot on how well your disc(s) glow and if you feel comfortable finding it if it gets out of sight...glow discs actually need a good UV light charging prior to throw, plus having a UV lamp helps locate glow discs. If you're taping 1.5" glowsticks or battery-powered Electro-Luminescent lights to a candy disc, you dont really need a UV black light, but please bring a glowstick for walking down fairways, etc, plus its not a bad idea for the first shooter in each group to light up the fairway with a bright flashlight all the way to the basket 2-3 secs max primarily to make sure non-players are clear of the flight path. http://dev.discgolfbirmingham.com/forums/images/icons/icon3.gif

*Bag tag challenges are fair game, should players decide to participate.

*Play at your own risk!!! In the dark its much easier to fall, etc. Let it be known beforehand that 'officially' we're not to be in the park after dark, so a police officer or injury/incident can call this off at any moment. If rain is in the forecast, wear good shoes with appreciable tread on the soles. We generally plan on playing even if the course is wet assuming there's no lightning or its not raining too hard at tee time. ANY lightning in the vicinity will be an automatic no-play.

For anyone wishing to donate to help cover supply costs, I put a $2 paypal link on my webpage (http://www.jebb.net) for those who never carry cash any more. Feel free to donate as many multiples of two as you can do.

Looks like I'll also have four 175g Glow Rocs up for grabs between now and then. Let me know if you want one.

I have played in an ice-bowl tournament the last few years that has a night round. Last year a friend of mine and I played several night rounds at George Ward to get ready for the event. Some things that I found useful:

The small "lure" glow sticks do not seem to throw off the balance of the disc, but I have even used glow braclets and short glow necklaces and neither appeared to adversely affect flightpath. Definitely bring a roll of clear packing tape along for the round to reaffix glow sticks that come off (if you hit a tree, for example), and make sure that your disc is clean before initially trying to tape it on.

Flashlights are important, of course, but I have found that judicious use is more important. I found that using flashlights initially to light the intended flightpath, then turning the flashlight off and waiting for your eyes to adjust, then throwing in the dark actually worked best (that is, with use of a glow stick). Ironically, I was better able to track and find the disc this way.

Hope this helps. I am looking forward to next weekend.

All the white light does is destroy your night vision.
I personally wish everyone would leave their white lights at home, cover the lens when they turn them on or use red filters to prevent night blindness.
There is no one that plays at GW on a regular basis that should need to check the trails or the disc flight path. The whole idea is to play in the dark. Some of the people playing regular night rounds don't evev have glow sticks on the basket and they are having no problems.
I have no problem with using the light if your glowie comes off your disc. Why would you look for a disc with a glow stick or LED on it using a white light?
Come on people, it is glowie disc golf not flashlight disc golf. If you can't find your way around GW at night, try going out at night with a few others and learning your way around. Lately there has been someone playing glowie at least 3-4 nights a week.
For veiwing the path to the basket, looking to see if there are objects/trees in front of your throw or just casual usage while walking there should be a...PENALTY STROKE.

My 2 cents

The main point of lighting up the fairway for 2-3 secs is to make sure we dont kill or maim innocent bystanders ;)

If there are people in the fairway that's their problem. They shouldn't be in the park either. Every one in the park after darkis taking their body/life and or discs in their own hands. So I have to say that lighting up the fairway is kinda stupid. just my opinion though.

from what we ended up seeing last time it makes no discernable difference either way, plus it would suck to hurt anyone :(

I'll be watching my 8-yr old niece tonight, so any help putting up the glow sticks would be much appreciated. We plan on showing up to do that around 7PM.

For anyone reading, I have more of the small 1.5" glow sticks (2/$1) and I found some of that kick ass clear duct tape as well. If you want to purchase some of these lights I'd recommend 2 per disc, as they last only about as long as 1/2 the course. I still have Four 175g Glow Rocs for sale as well, $15 ea.

This time I promise to actually have change too! :p

Last night was a whole lot of fun, my seven year old niece wants to play in the daytime now :)

Counted just over 20 people total too, glad everyone had a good time.
