View Full Version : Thoughts on next 'Friday Night Flights' event?

Several of us have been talking about a night doubles tourney since having 5 or so groups playing at the last night game (some groups w 5 players) :D Just was wondering what everyone thought about setting up the next event. Of course, we have to probably still approach this from the 'beg forgiveness rather than ask permission' standpoint and make sure everyone knows explicitly that its still 'play at own risk'.

I have enough glowstick supply left to set up the course twice. The next new moon is Sat Oct 21. edit: Weekends of Oct 13 & 20 are 2 major events, but plans for night game now backed up a week to Oct 13th.

The main thing I worry about - since we're in the park after dark, I dont want to put anyone involved (esp anyone w dgb) at any risk of unfavorable recourse should something happen out there, which is why I post now asking for thoughts/opinions :)

edit: going to start consolidating all my night golf links here too

Moon phases (play close to a new moon so its darker out):

Electro-luminescent micro lights (preferrable over glowsticks on a disc, worth 20 hours of light):

Glow sticks (6" green glow sticks for the baskets and 'walking around' light):

UV Black lights (for charging glow discs):

GLOW DISCS (be sure to have a UV light to charge them!)

I don't know how exclusive you guys are looking to make this, but, there are 3 of us who would be there for sure who were not at the last one. We have been talking about wanting to do this since we starting playing at GW. I am glad you guys finally made it happen. Quick question: Did you guys who played this last week have any sort of visitors (from police to homeless)? Just curious.

Only a couple of small harmless run-ins that I know of, one involving a couple having sex off of 13. Next time we should probably spread out the starting tees across the park for each group so we have a better handle on bystanders sneaking into fairways. Probably wouldnt be a bad idea for the first shooter in each group to light up the fairway all the way to the basket for a few secs with a bright flashlight, if for nothing else to be sure we wont hit any others out who are also out 'taking a few strokes' :D

Oct 21st is the weekend of Alabama States if you were planning on coming up to Huntsville for that. Also, I think its the weekend of USDGC if you guys got anyone going to that you'll probably lose them as well.

Thanks for the reminder on that David... doesn't really have to be that weekend I suppose (unless we just do one up there too) :)

OK, from looking at the calendar we should back it up a week to Friday the 13th of October. Although not a new moon we should still be fine. I've ordered a bunch of those battery-powered lights for people to tape onto discs and I should have a few glow rocs to unload as well. Look back up at my first post, all my good supply links are posted if you're also preparing to play. You certainly want a UV light if you get any glow discs.

doh.. sorry TK, a lot is going on in Oct disc-golf-wise. I dont think the DGB calendar has everything listed? We'll probably stick with Oct 13th on this one though and try to make Friday Night Flights a regular Winter event every 2-3 weeks or min once a month since its so much fun :)

I dont think the DGB calendar has everything listed?

I have to type those in manually so i only list stuff withing a close "driveable" range of Birmingham.

If you want to check around to see whats scheduled try these two sites:

...ahhh ok, thanks Justin. In case I haven't already said it, this site rocks http://dev.discgolfbirmingham.com/forums/images/icons/icon14.gif

Anyhow, thinking we should just do another casual singles game on the 13th and plan up this doubles thing for a month out past that and do it right.

edit: new event posted, on for Fri Oct 13th. I know some will be attending USDGC then, so catch us next time!
