The Free The Hops fund raising event a was a huge success! We had 70 people play in the tournament and the FTH crew were at about 300 for lunch when i left.

Of the 70 disc golfers 33 of them were first time tournament players! Thanks so much to those new golfers for coming out. We hope you had a good time and we see you again in future events!

If you missed the news paper article on Sunday, check it out here (http://www.al.com/news/birminghamnews/index.ssf?/base/news/1157880340260920.xml&coll=2)!

In the madness I believe I gave away the cards that let me know who won the CTP's, but of the few i remember, Joe Thacker, Nicki Douglas, Jebb Long, Ben S., David Hunt and Viktor were among the winners.

I'd like to say thanks to all the players for being patient with me. This is only the second event i've tried to run and the first was very small. We weren't really expecting a turnout of SEVENTY! The delay on getting the scores posted was my fault because I managed to give away Stacey's players card in the commotion. Thanks to Beth for helping me straighten that out. I learned alot from this event and I'm sure the next one will be even better!

Huge thanks to those that helped, Viktor, Jebb, Michael, Ben, and everyone else.

What were the winning scores for the amateur divisions?

As one of the first time tourney players, I have to say the event was a lot of fun and I look forward to doing it again.

Thanks for all the hard work you do Justin to keep the events running down there. I was also one of the CTP winners though I still can't believe it stood up, I assume no one could find it :P

See yall next trip.

What were the winning scores for the amateur divisions?

I believe the winning score for the women was +11, even par for the Intermediates and -7 for the advanced.

Intermediates were TIGHT. I played +3 and was in something like a 5-way tie for 10th place. I should have ended up with a +1 but my putting game still blows :(

Good quotes by Justin in the paper this morning. Bassing actually approved it for accuracy. They could have mentioned the term "golf discs", but it was still great exposure.

Ah man, i forgot to get a paper. Can you hang on to that copy for me so i can take a look at it Tom?

The guy was talking to me while i was trying to figure out payouts, i was a little distracted, haha.

I'm really stoked about how this tournament turned out. The one thing i keep coming back to is the 33 first time tournament players. That means 43% of the field had never played an organized tournament before, thats awesome. I hope the come back for more!

Barbecue backs Free the Hops

Friday, September 08, 2006 BILL PLOTT

News staff writer
Free the Hops, the organization campaigning to bring gourmet beers to Alabama, will host a fund-raising barbecue on Saturday in conjunction with a tournament by Disc Golf Birmingham.
The event will be at George Ward Park on Green Springs Highway, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
"This is a fund-raiser for Free the Hops' efforts to hire a lobbyist for the next legislative session," said organizer Danner Kline.
<script src="http://ads.al.com/RealMedia/ads/adstream_jx.ads/www.al.com/xml/story/Birmingham/z/zwe/@StoryAd" language="JavaScript1.1"></script><script language="JavaScript"> <!-- if (parseFloat(navigator.appVersion) == 0) { document.write('<IFRAME WIDTH=468 HEIGHT=60 MARGINWIDTH=0 MARGINHEIGHT=0 HSPACE=0 VSPACE=0 FRAMEBORDER=0 SCROLLING=no BORDERCOLOR="#000000" SRC="http://ads.al.com/RealMedia/ads/adstream_sx.ads/www.al.com/xml/story/Birmingham/z/zwe/@StoryAd"></IFRAME>'); } --></script> <noscript> http://ads.al.com/RealMedia/ads/adstream_nx.ads/www.al.com/xml/story/Birmingham/z/zwe/@StoryAd?x (http://ads.al.com/RealMedia/ads/click_nx.ads/www.al.com/xml/story/Birmingham/z/zwe/@StoryAd?x) </noscript> Free the Hops is attempting to get the alcohol content of beer in Alabama changed from 6 percent to 14 percent maximum. Proponents say the change would allow the state to have more expensive gourmet beers that are sold much like table wines in other states.
"We had already planned to have the barbecue at George Ward Park when the idea of combining with Disc Golf Birmingham came up. George Ward is one of two parks in Birmingham that has actual regulations holes for disc golf," Kline said.
Disc golf is a relatively new sport that combines traditional golf with flying discs such as Frisbees. It is played the same way as golf except the discs are thrown to reach the holes.
Kline said a 24-hole tournament will be held with cash and other prizes for the best performances. Entry fees are $12-$17 based on divisions and include lunch.
Other activities will include live music by Ross Chester, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.; and HoneyBaked, 1-5 p.m. Kline said barbecue will be served from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Plates are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and younger.

Sounds like Disc Golf got some good coverage. That's awesome. Sorry I had to split early before the pay outs and tags where handed back out. I had promised I'd help move a fridge with my brother-in-law.

Justin, who can I pick up my tag from? I can catch up with who ever any afternoon bu today at GW.

Thanks for working hard at the Tourney so we could enjoy it.

Disc golf tournament on par with Free the Hops barbecue

Sunday, September 10, 2006 BILL PLOTT

News staff writer
For Beth Sheets, being in the rough was no different than if she had been on a country club golf course.
When she climbed down into a watery ditch to retrieve her orange Frisbee, it was the same as if she had sliced or hooked a white golf ball there with a club.
Sheets was among 70 or so people participating in a Disc Golf Birmingham tournament at George Ward Park on Saturday. The event was held in conjunction with a barbecue sponsored by Free the Hops, a campaign to bring gourmet beers to Alabama.
<script src="http://ads.al.com/RealMedia/ads/adstream_jx.ads/www.al.com/xml/story/Birmingham/n/nmet/@StoryAd" language="JavaScript1.1"></script><script language="JavaScript"> <!-- if (parseFloat(navigator.appVersion) == 0) { document.write('<IFRAME WIDTH=468 HEIGHT=60 MARGINWIDTH=0 MARGINHEIGHT=0 HSPACE=0 VSPACE=0 FRAMEBORDER=0 SCROLLING=no BORDERCOLOR="#000000" SRC="http://ads.al.com/RealMedia/ads/adstream_sx.ads/www.al.com/xml/story/Birmingham/n/nmet/@StoryAd"></IFRAME>'); } --></script> <noscript> http://ads.al.com/RealMedia/ads/adstream_nx.ads/www.al.com/xml/story/Birmingham/n/nmet/@StoryAd?x </noscript> "This has been a great turnout," said Justin Littrell, 28, one of the disc golf organizers. "We were only expecting around 50 people. This is just our second casual tournament and at the first one we had 42 people."
Disc golf is played by basically the same rules as regular golf except participants use Frisbees or similar discs instead of golf balls. The "holes" are elevated wire baskets.
"You've got the basket, a tee box and you count strokes, just like golf," said Littrell, but added that it's quicker and cheaper.
"You can play 18 holes in under two hours, and you can spend $10 for a nice disc and play for a year. You don't lose sleeves of discs."
The sport started in the 1970s and has a wide following in tournament play and also at an extreme level.
George Ward Park is one of two regulation disc golf courses in the Birmingham area. Littrell said he thinks players have helped revitalize the park.
"On a Sunday afternoon there will be 200 disc golfers out here. Between them and the softball players, this place has been reclaimed. There were a lot of woods where there are fairways now," he said.
He said most disc golfers tend to be outdoor people into rock climbing, biking and other activities. Oddly enough, he said his friends in Free the Hops tend to be outdoor types also rather than the couch potatoes associated with beer drinkers.
Danner Kline, organizer of Free the Hops, said Saturday's event was a fund-raiser for both organizations. Free the Hops is trying to raise money to hire a lobbyist for the upcoming legislative session.
Free the Hops seeks to raise the alcohol limit on beer in Alabama from 6 percent to 14 percent, about the same as table wines. He said the higher alcohol content beers tend to be gourmet products, many of them geared toward food pairings. He said they also tend to be upscale in price and won't likely be found in convenience stores.
By midday both organizations said they had signed up several new members and called the gathering a bit of natural teamwork.
"When the golfers arrived we were setting up for the barbecue. Most of them decided they might as well eat lunch here," said Kline.

Not bad publicity at all!

If you guys have a minute drop an email to Mr. Plott and let him know you appreciate his support!

My friend and I (both first timers) had a blast. I was very impressed with how smoothly everything ran. Also, thanks to those who had played before for answering all of the newbie questions. You guys are great and most helpful. So, now that we are hooked, I will be the first to ask: When is the next one gonna be?

I think we should rename the ditch on hole 13 "Sheets Ravine" or "The Beth Abyss" as a tribute to my publicity.

I'll give you Sheet's Ravine if you'll give me hole #2 at Trussville as the "Littrell Gorge", haha.

Just in case any of you guys skip straight to this page I've updated the first post with the full results. I'll have the bag tags that i still have listed this afternoon.

Thanks again everybody. Expect the next DGB event to be sometime mid November!

I'm actually putting up a poll right now to find out whatever everyone thinks about that. If not then November one then the January one FOR SURE. I'm _ready_ to see some action at Trussville, but I want to make sure we have all these new players hooked before we start changing the venue!
