Joe Thacker makes his approach shot on the first hole of the six hole finals.
The weather in Mobile was great with cooler than average temperatures and no parcipitation until a sprinkle came through during the Open finals. Joe Thacker started Sunday on the second card with several strokes to make up but managed to close within two strokes of second place by the end of the day. This setup a six hole finals at Municipal with a total of six players (four plus ties) which saw Joe making up two strokes to tie Tony Bass for second place. No one was going to touch Matt Orum as he entered the finals with a seven stroke lead. The final hole, a 750ft+ open hole, finished at a temporary basket setup inside a large pavillion. With over 100 spectators looking on Matt Orum narrowly missed a two by flying over the basket from 300' feet out. Joe Thacker managed to get close enough to make a 30' putt with the gallery looking on to score the only three on the hole and secure his tie with Tony Bass.
In the Advanced Masters division Richard Brown played a solid weekend and finished in 7th place to take home some of the incredible amount of plastic awarded at the event. In Intermediate Viktor Holmberg and Thomas McGary finsihed tied for 9th place. Viktor and Tom also combinend to finish 1st in the doubles event on Friday.
Other friends of Birmingham also faired well. Lavonne Wolfe from Huntsville took home the Grandmasters division title and Marla Lenox of Hartselle won the Advanced Womens division in an amazing six hole playoff with Judy Haydel.
All of the golfers from Birmingham would like to sincerly thank the Chris LaSonde and the Mobile crew for an amazing event!
