We've got an exciting event coming up for September's DGB Mini Tournament!
http://www.discgolfbirmingham.com/files/fth_logo.jpg
The beer advocates over at Free The Hops (http://www.freethehops.org/) have decided to team up with DGB for their fall fund raising event. What this means to you is for a low entry fee you get a round of golf, BBQ lunch, live music, and you support a great cause near and dear to many disc golfers hearts....good beer!
Free The Hops is a grassroots, citizen-driven movement solely committed to lifting archaic beer laws governing the state of Alabama. Our DGB Mini Tournament this month will benefit FTH. Expect a ton of CTP's just like last time, with some special ones provided by FTH! There will be a BBQ lunch, refreshments, as well as live music by Ross Chester and HoneyBaked (http://www.myspace.com/honeybakedband)! There will likely be some pickup doubles (format undecided) in the afternoon.

Ya'll bring your friends. This will be a LOT of fun. I did not see it mentioned, but Rojo (restaraunt on Highlands) will be making chipotle slaw to go with the bbq. The music should be really good. We hope to have a lot of people. I look forward to playing in my first amateur tourney (other than on Sunday afternoons).

I am taking sign ups for the Ace Race. It will be Sept31/Oct 1. Two days , two events. Winners on both days. Players pack includes 2 new prototype discs , a hat and a Super Color mini from Discraft. This is the 4th year for this event here. I have ordered 50 packs and if they sell quickly, I'll order more. Last year we had 80 players. About 20 did not get in because they waited too long to sign up. You must sign up in advanced to guarantee a spot.
The course will be set up super short and you will use one of your new discs and try to get an Ace on every hole , the regular 18. One point if you hit metal and 5 points if you hit an Ace. At the end of each day, we will give out prizes based on points. Everyone is a winner. The $20 entry, gets you $50 worth of stuff. the two discs alone are $30 retail. There is a poster on the board. I'll be taking entries from now untill the end of Sept. Don't wait.

A few of my friends and I plan on entering the tourney (our 1st). Could you guys explain how it is set up for 24 holes? Is this including the extra holes up in the woods? Also, will the hole set up be the same as the Golden George this past April? Thanks a bunch.

Tom,
I want to sign up for the ace race on saturday. Is there a time I can catch you at George Ward to get you some money? Will you be in town this weekend or off to Southern Nationals? If you can go ahead and pencil me in please.
Thanks,
Michael Armstrong

the 24 holes include the extra's in the woods. The set up was short locations for the last mini tournament. I am assuming it will be similar to how the park/course is set up now. maybe 5 will be in one of the short positions that us mere mortals stand a chance of playing the hole well.

The entire purporse of these tournaments is to give first time/casual players a chance to see what tournament golf is like, so this is the perfect event for you and your friends to try out!
The hole setup will be medium/short and we do play all 24 (including the six wood holes). Hole 5 will probably be in the medium, 11 in the short, 15 accross the creek, etc. All you need to do is show up during the registration time at the pavillion near hold 16 and you'll be good to go! If you have any other questions please let us know!

Ok, for those of us who are new to the tournament/disc golf world, could someone post a link to offcial rules for disc golf to be followed this Saturday. I don't want to be the guy who breaks a rule because he didn't know any better. Thanks Greg

We're here for the newbie questions!
This will be a _very_ casual tournament. We're going to make every effort to put one expierenced tournament player with each group of "newbies".
Here are the official rules of disc golf as stipulated by the PDGA - http://www.pdga.com/rules/index.php?rule=all
We will be in observence of these rules for all our DGB tournaments.
Really, the few things to remember to do as a first time tournament player are:
1) Always mark your lie. You have the option of playing from behind your disc (don't flip it over or otherwise touch it) or place a mini-marker in front of your disc and pickup your disc and play from the mini. We will have mini's available for those that don't have them.
2) Always remember to putt out. So often in casual rounds we will pick up a disc that has landed under the basket and just walk off. In tournament golf a disc must come to rest in the basket in order for the hole to be completed.
3) Order of play is also something you have to get used to paying attention to. Just like ball golf, the furthest person from the target plays first
4) OB rules...just like ball golf, if you go OB you have to take a penalty stroke to get back inbounds. As far as water hazards/other marked OB's its the same as ball golf. You go to the spot that the disc went into the OB and play for there taking one penalty stroke. In the event of a lost disc its a bit different, you have to retake the throw and take a penalty stroke. So if you loose a disc from the tee you have to go back to the tee and you'll be throwing your third stroke
That's really the basics, the best way to learn tournament rules is by playing in the tournaments. Most people are glad to help with those that are new to tournament golf!

Speak for yourself, I'm just there to win... Just kidding. Anyone interested in a practice round after work on Friday?
I meant to ask earlier as I dont know anyone yet from FTH, but will there be any vegetarian cuisine at lunch? Although already signed up and about 95% vegetarian other than eating fish and occasional chicken, I dont mind so much about the BBQ, but have a group of friends who would like to participate who are complete vegetarians. I even met a girl on the course who said she wanted to come but was vegetarian. Is there anything to be said that will ease their minds and give them reason to show up and pay?

Thanks guys for the answers. Another question. Will all of the OB be marked or is it something that you just have to know? I think I remember a big map on here back in April that had the hole layouts (OB, hole placement) Does this still exist somewhere?

The OBs are pretty simple. Try playing with some of the locals and they can help you learn them. Most are obvious and usually for safety reasons.

The OB's are _very_ straightforward....parking lots and main roads are ob, service roads aren't. road behind hole 3, parking lot on hole 5, water except for any in the ditch on hole C. That about covers it...

ditch on 17 I would assume is also OB

Right on, I wouldn't even mind bringing a couple dozen black bean burger patties myself if it helps out.

I received a reply from "David" and they will have veggie burgers and chicken. They also know not to park on the grass near 16 and to watch out for big hyzer shots. A few extra bean burgers(?) might be a good idea.

Me too! I just put the CTP's in bags last night, going to be _at least_ 9CTP's out there one for each division, two for bag taggers, locals only, out of towners, FTH members, etc.
Oh, and you need to change that location in your profile from "Birmingham Loft" to "Parents Basement" haha....
