Most of you know that the UAB Intramural event will be Sat Ap 5, @ 2:00.
One round, free entry to current students.
However, I just heard that the PIKE's are hosting another tourney in April. Perhaps a PIKE alum is in charge. Maybe JD can find out more details for us?

there is not a current chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha on campus but there is a Pi Kappa Phi and if its them who wants a challange then so be it. Where did you hear about the pikes? Theres some in Montevallo.

A UAB golfer told me. He didn't say anything about a challange. He said they are going to host an event. Maybe it is just for themselves? He was also supposed to send me the contact's name. He has not.

UAB Sucks! Go Jags! Sorry I'm a little giddy from the fact that we're the only Alabama team dancing. Got an at large bid and everything. For you young whippersnappers, UAB and USA were big rivals in the old Sunbelt.

The man gets one win and all of a sudden he's the king of trash talk...haha.

Can't wait for the tournament, AL teams or opening Thursday and Friday of the NCAA tournament is one of my favorite sporting events. So many games, so little time.

lol, I actually almost chose usa for med school so I guess I can see the appeal... though only slightly ;)

How can you not see the appeal? Beautiful campus that isn't in a demilitarized zone, tons of hot ON CAMPUS coeds, primo DG course on campus (right by the med school), one hour from the beach (hot coeds in bikinis on a daily basis), and Mardi Gras. Sure you've got hurricanes, but that's why we have hurrican parties. Oh yeah, you don't have to pay to park.

Josh

PS I guess I should shut up though. In 4 years when you graduate, you'll be able to call me at work, yell at me, and I'll still have to kiss your butt and act like you know what you're talking about. :D

Looks like there will be a UAB Team going to the Collegiate Nationals in a few weeks.
Brad Wardman is heading it up , with Tiger and Big Justin as top team members. The Intrmural event this Sat. will firm up the team.

The UAB Team is together. Brad, Jeremy, Big Justin and Jonathon. They will compete against the likes of UA, UM, CA, MI , GA, etc. They have free entry and food when they get there. All they have to do is get there and pay for the motel. With that in mind, I will be taking up a collection of anything we all can donate to help them on the trip. Bring whatever you can Wed night and I will present it to them before they leave Thursday! At least one of them will be out there Wed night. If everyone pitches in a buck or two, that might be the first tank of gas.
Tiger, don't tell. You are the only one that reads this. WE can make it a surprise.!

We are on the way to a couple of tanks of gas for the team. Thanks to Art and Bill for generous donations today. If everyone can bring some sort of paper money to League and put it in the box, we may be able to help with their hotel room also. They are leaving Thursday.

Team T'town stopped by for a warm up round today. They probably were within 30 minutes of our UAB team on the road. Big Justin pulled $57 out of the donation box. The first fillup was $56.! They are probably in Augusta now. Practice in the morning and Doubles in the afternoon.

Hey guys, figured I'd give you the update on the going on. 11 teams showed up for the 2nd annual collegiate championships. The teams that showed are UGA, Georgia Southern, Georgia College, UA Tuscaloosa, Clemson, Nebraska, USC (Southern California), Virginia Tech, Kentucky, East Georgia, and of course UAB. We're playing the Hippodrome, used in the 06 worlds (the course where Tom had to drop out from food poisoning). After last year's "world's caliber course" Pete May decided to tone things down. We're playing an extremely short setup for three rounds and then a slightly longer setup with OB for two rounds. About 70% of the shots are turnovers/sidearm shots with a decent mix of open and wooded holes.

Day one started off with a singles round from the red (am) tees (no OB during this round). Kentucky had the best score at -9, I shot a -8 with two other players. After that were a few 7s, 6s, and 5s and then a nice range of other scores. The rest of team UAB shot -4, -3, and -2. The best three scores are taken, so we were sitting at -15, two strokes behind UGA who had a combined -17. Clemson was in second with -16, UA was tied with us at -15.

For doubles we paired Big Justin with me, and Brad and John Bramm. Both teams shot -12 (in doubles only the best doubles score was taken) so we're now sitting at -27. UGA, and Va Tech (with the help of Phil, formerly of UA) shot -15s moving UGA to -31 overall, Va tech jumped us to put them at -29 withed with Clemson and UA beat us by one in doubles to move them to -28.

Following the rounds today they held a putting contest. They had three baskets setup next to each other and a pile of 10 putters at each basket. A chain was extended from each basket with 10 tags denoting distances from 5 ft to 40ish ft. The basic format was starting from the closest tag put until you make moving back with each make. UAB will be bringing home at least one championship as I won the putting contest hitting 9 out of 10 putts . John tied with 3 others going 8 of 10.

So currently we're sitting in 5th, 4 strokes out of first. Tomorrow's format will be two singles rounds, the first from the Blue tees, which will have some OB and should spread the scores out a little more. Then second round moves us back to the short tees. Following that I believe we're doing a long drive contest. Sunday we will finish up with a round of alternate doubles from the blue tees.

Its been a good tourny so far and I'll give another update tomorrow.

Day two at the National Collegiate Disc Golf:

So today brought a new day and some unfortunate news. I'll get to the bad stuff later, but for now lets just hit the highlights. Both rounds today played from the "long" blue tees today with OB coming into play. The wind was stiff but not unmanegeable to start though it picked up about midway through the round and we had off and on rain. On the lead card I shot a 49 (best score of the round) with other scores on the card at 59, 60, and 62. There were three 45s from other players. The rest of the UAB team had some unfortunate luck carding scores of +6 for Brad, +10 for Big Justin, and +11 for Jonathan.

The second round saw us playing once again from the red tees with no OBs. I led the way with a -12, a pair of -1s from Justin and John, and E from Brad. The next best score was a -9. So after both rounds we were sitting in a good spot going into tomorrows alternate shot doubles round... but wait... I haven't told you about the bad news...

Thanks to a failure to observe the website and communcation we were unaware that I was ineligble for this weekend's event. This was an am only event. So pete came up to me before the rest round and told us. So we that of course we've lost all those strokes which has dropped us to 8th place. Add to that John, Brad, and Justin played in the GUTS challenge tonight. Brad injured himself and will not be able to play tomorrow.

Right now Clemson is in the team lead. I can't remember all the other standings, but I think Alabama is still in the hunt. They're doing an "All-American team" with the first 6 singles competitors making the first team and then next 6 making the second team. A kid from UGA took the first spot while Alabama's own Josh Maynor took the last first team All-American spot.

We had a captains meeting today and all the school agreed they wanted to play the "world's gold course" setup for alternate doubles tomorrow. So that should at least make for some interesting golf and maybe give us a chance of finishing respectfully. I'll give a final summary tomorrow night once we get back into town.

p.s. watching Pete May play guts was freaking hilarious and awesome

Sorry about the bad news Tiger. Those were some great scores you posted. Also looks like some of those other players are "closet" Pros. Maybe you can get the guys into the IDGC on your way out of town.? Have a safe trip back.

Who won?

"Tiger"

Hello all, last update for the National Championship. This morning's round saw for some pretty high scores as, through a captains meeting, the alternate shot doubles round played from an modified 2006 world's course. Added length, plus some very tight lines and OB made for some interesting and creative shots from all the competitors. Thanks to my ineligibilty and Brad's hurting himself (we're still not exactly sure how or when) yesterday we only had one of our doubles teams competing. Big Justin and Jonathan shot well, but some early nerve putting proved to much for us. They shot I believe 14 over bringing our weekend total to +18.

Going into this last round UGA had a 6 stroke lead over Clemson who held a four stroke lead over Kentucky, followed closely by UVA and Alabama (UAT :D). Clemson blew up early and saw themsevles slip from a possible first place finish to a tie for 3rd. They played off with Va Tech for the third place trophy but we left early and so I'm not sure who won it. Kentucky played some solid golf to take home second but UGA despite carding an impressively horrible 10 (+5) on the last hole manage to stave off all competitors and when the tournament bout 5 or 6 strokes.

We had great time (despite my being DQ'd) and we'll look to put up a team for next years event. By the way Tom, you didn't know I'm a pro ;)

The "Pro" thing never actually came up. I guess the T'town boys didn't think about it either, since they all knew you were going. Full Time Student was the big thing. Sure did look like some of those other players are ready to go "Pro" with you. Here is the link:

Glad you are all back safe and sound.

That sucks Jeremy. Seems like being a student at the school you're representing should be the only stipulation.

"Tiger"
04-21-2008, 09:49 AM
yeah, you would think so. But I guess Pete's main reason for wanting it to be am only was to level the playing field. I shot a 137 through 3 rounds of singles (they let me stay on and play the rest of the weekend). The guy who ended up winning shot a 147. You could imagine if other pros who were still in college came things would be completely lopsided and may deter teams from coming. Avery Jenkins only just graduated from Oregan, imagine if he'd come last year. Apparently it was on the website that it was an am only event (I didn't organize our team so I never saw this and no one else saw it either) so its our fault for not noticing. It was still fun and I'll work to try and get another UAB team to go next year.

I'm going to ask them to give more advanced and general info on a flyer for next year.
