With the main contacts of this project out the worlds in Augusta it's important for DGB to make a showing at this event. If you don't have anything going on next Tuesday post up and we can show up in mass and maybe grab a beer afterwards. Tuesday is pint night @ Fox & Hound afterall....

Open House with Wallace, Roberts & Todd on 8/8 at McWane Center

Representatives from Wallace, Roberts & Todd—the landscape design firm tasked with creating the park's master plan—will be back in Birmingham from August 8th - 12th. Come hear an update on progress to this point on Tuesday evening, August 8th, from 5:30 - 7:00pm at the McWane Science Center. This will be a great opportunity to add your voice to the ongoing discussion of potential park features and facilities. Read the Press Release » (http://www.redmountainpark.org/news/pr_20060728.pdf)

Ok, it looks like i'm going to be out of town. If _anyone_ can make even a brief appearance here it would go a long way.

I went to the last meeting, so to give you an idea of what to expect....You'll sign in and once the presentation starts it will probably be a 20-30 minute mixed media presentation. Then they will dismiss and you'll have time to speak with the developers. If possible at least say "hello" and "we're looking forward to any outdoor sports activities the park might have, especially disc golf and other eco-friendlies" etc... You'll probably be out of there in less than an hour.

I might be able to drop by on my break around 6:30. I work 3 to 10 so that is the best I can do. I will try my best to be there. We need more courses!

may be a silly idea, but does anyone have a portable basket they could take and set up on the sidewalk outside with a bunch of spare discs to let everyone have a go at putting a few? nothing like hands-on ;)

I do indeed have a mach lite that could be used. We'll see if I can actually make it though... we have a dinner at my coaches house around 5:30

I just found out that my help is not coming tonight and I will be at work by myself. This means I can't make the meeting. I hope some of you have had better luck and can make it. I'll look forward to hearing good news.

Interesting meeting tonight. Disc golf is already on the Wallace, Roberts & Todd (landscape architecture) radar screen. It was mentioned prominently as a possible land use/activity that could show up in the master plan that is due around December.

Maybe because of the support we gave during the legislative process to create a park commission/board of trustees...maybe because of the interest showed on Friends of Red Mountain's website forums...maybe because we represent at the public meetings. Whatever the reason, we are being heard.

It may still be a ways off, but I'm optimistic that B'ham and surrounding communities will have three quality disc golf courses, if not more, in the not too distant future.

I also saw Mark Claus (sp?) there putting in a good word for disc sports.

One or two of us at each of these meetings will insure that we keep dg in front of the people who have some say in what happens at RMP. Keep your fingers crossed and keep supporting the park. :)

Thanks for making it out there Richard. I think you hit the nail on the head, we just have to keep reminding the firm/project that the Disc Golfers _do_ care and want to have a course and it will get done. Maybe when the specifics of the land get more concrete we can actually go out there and look around.

I believe that we have Joe Thacker to thank for getting Disc Golf on the radar. He told me had met some of the project designers at a wedding or something like that and was able to have a good conversation with them and got them on board. He was told that there would be a course in the master plan from them, but as for the funding for it they couldn't promise anything.

I think getting people out to these meetings will help us get the funding needed for a great course. Maybe if we can get a course in the new park it will open up some other parks around the city for courses too. Sorry missed last night meeting. I'll try to make it out for the next one.

I think that Mark is an Ultimate player. We each supported both sports at one of the private meetings in the beginning. Glad he was there too.
I also know a disc golfer in the office up in Philly. That might help also.
