View Full Version : How accurate are the distances from tee to basket @ GW?

Just curious...

'Worm' and I were taking a lunch break today and probably 85% of our conversations are about disc golf and the sort, but we got to thinking about how accurate the distances were for George Ward park from tee box to each basket placement and how they had been measured.

We weren't disagreeing with the decisions made on distance and marked on the very nice wooden tee box legend, but were just thinking that if they were measured with something like a distance wheel rolled up and down the hills then the distances are inaccurate and could be off up to 30' or more.

You see, 'Worm' and I work for a survey company and on occasion, if we ask, they'll let us take the instruments home with us to use for personal "business". We were thinking today that it would be cool if one day that we both had a whole day to kill (rare) that we would bring our survey equipment out and measure each hole with each basket placement within 1/8 of an inch, not that you would throw to inches but that's how tight this thing can record distance.

But if they have been measured this way already or everyones happy with what's already there then nevermind this, just a fun idea we thought of and figured we could get a round in at the same time, :D.

The current distances should be fairly accurate. Each distance we measured over summer 07 pretty much matched a list of distances Richard had done years prior, so I feel quite confident we did a thorough job sans precision surveying equipment. The tee signs are all in adobe illustrator however and can be edited/reprinted easily (some such as 16 already need it), so if you want to get medieval by all means that would be very cool :)

As for the method, we used a 300' reel tape measure borrowed from Richard Brown. Ralph always held it centered against the end of the tee pad edge while JustinL and I stretched the tape in a straight line to each position. (this involved quite a few tape rewinds to reposition in order to preserve that 'straight line' measure). We also had a large distance wheel but only used it when we were within 40 or so feet of the basket on level terrain. I was even obsessive enough to move sticks and rocks out of its path. Regardless, the geek in me runs strong so it would be too cool to have the distances to within 0.125" :D

If you decide to take this on, here are the pdf's to print for marking corrections:

Thanks, and I look forward to meeting you out on the course soon.

Sounds to me like you would be pretty close, maybe if we do get this chance we could just come out and check a few and see how close you are, hehe:D.

Doing it the way you described above I'd say you're within' a foot or two just guessing which is pretty damn close for just pulling a tape. I'll let you know if we get time to do this and maybe you can come check it out.

Hehe, do I hear distance contest? Measued to the thousandth!:p
