Hope everyone is doing well. I spoke briefly with some folks at the registration table this last Saturday about a possible one day tournament done in conjuction with a BBQ benefit for Free the Hops planned for Saturday September 9th. I believe it was Tim (?) that I met. I am sorry but I am really bad with names. Anyway, would someone from DGB shoot me an email sometime to start a discussion about the possibility of combining events? I think it is easily a win-win situation. I know the leaders at FTH are excited about the possibility of this working out. Thanks.

Hey Chris, I'm Justin. I was the guy sitting at the table Saturday. Viktor (bazkitcase on this board) and I ran the tournament Saturday. This was the first of (we hope) to be a series of tournaments that we want to have in order to encourage more recrational players to become tournament active.

The Free the Hops date is right inline with when we want to have our next tournament. I know the Disc Golf community pretty well and Free the Hops is the kind of cause most of us would be interested in.

For those disc golfers that want to check out FTH and the details on the event click here (http://www.freethehops.org/bbq.php).

I'll shoot you an email, and we can talk about what you would like to see as far as the tournament and the relation to FTH.

Oh, and this actually kind of relates to a picture i saw the other day....

I believe in these difficult and mean-spirited times in which we live there needs to be a message of hope. Just a single image that speaks to us of love, harmony, peace and joy. An image that suggests the universal brotherhood of man. I have found that image, and I ask that all of you take a moment to be inspired by it.

Excellent, thanks Justin (and David). I am simultaneously carrying on a dialouge with the FTH guys. I am sending them a link to the message board. For email, you can send anything you would like for the FTH organizers to read to either . . .

leaders@freethehops.org

or

discussion@freethehops.org

Again, we are all excited about this potentially working out. What details would you need to know from us that could help in planning? If we are able to come to an agreement about things, I am sure we would add this to our flyer and use our newsletter receiving supporters (~700 people) to advertise.

Good news guys and gals, It looks like this co-op is going to be a go!

The prices look like they will be a follows:

Am w/out lunch - $5
Am w/lunch - $12
Pro w/out lunch - $10
Pro w/lunch - $17

Ams....$12 for golf AND lunch. You can't beat that!

TONS of CTP's just like last time. We expect to have CTP's on at least 15 Holes! At _least_ a couple for each division and a few specialty ones!

The lunch is going to be BBQ, good stuff. I'm not sure of the source yet but the "fixin's" are going to be provided by RoJo, an amazing restaurant. The early word is that there are going to be several beers available from a range of breweries. I'm not sure exactly how all thats going to work but the FTH guys will be along shortly to let us know.

If you want to get on the FTH mailing list to get the latest news click here (http://www.freethehops.org/index.php)!

Looking forward to it, guys.

Note that there will be no sale of beer. Very important. We are not selling beer.

But we have gotten a permit to possess alcohol in the park on the day of the event. Several of us will be bringing some beer and will be happy to share.

I'm willing to put $10-15 bucks or so into a keg fund so we can get a keg of something nice to keep next to the score table :)

(unless thats what your winking smilie implies already hahah)

Don't worry. No need for a keg fund.

Trust me.

Hey Bob-

Is Kelly around? I have not seen him at the course. I would like to see him to get a couple of those Vulcan-stamped rocs. Just wondering

Michael

Ps Ran into a guy, Kevin Misiak, in Atlanta at the Hotlanta tourney. He asked if you were there and was sorry you couldn't make it.

Vulcan Stamped Rocs sound cool. I've heard a lot about that disc but haven't tried one yet (I'm a third-season player). If anyone knows how one of these can be had, please let me know.

TK was nice enough to donate a few of them to the DGB Tournament cause, we'll probably make them available as bag tag only CTP's for the next tournament!

Hey guys. I'm a FTH member, and I'm thinking about playing in this tournament. Can you give me some ideas where discs can be purchased in the B'ham area? Gotta practice up!

Also, what's involved with playing at GW? Can you just walk up and play? Do you have to sign in? etc.

Thanks.

To play a George Ward all you gotta do is walk up and start playing. There are no fees or sign in boards or anything like that.

As to where to get your discs. Academy Sports, Homewood Sporting Goods, Homewood Toy and Hobbie, Dics Sporting Goods, and of Course Tom Monroe and his portable pro shop. Tom runs www.discgolfwarehouse.com as well.

I take it these would be your first discs. I suggest getting a Valkeryie or Beast driver, a shark mid range, and a birdie or aviar putter. I you might want to get weights in the 160g to low 170g disc for the mid and divers. Putters can be a little heavier that that. lighter discs will be easier to control while the heavier discs willdo better in the wind.

Just ask if you have any more questions.

Great advice Michael.

R.T., If you're looking for some of the basics chatching Tom Monroe at the course weekday afternoons or pretty much anytime on the weekend is a good idea. The man has forgotten more about throwing a disc than most of us have ever known.

Also, feel free to drop me an email at jlittrell@gmail.com and let me know when you're going to be out at the course. We have a pretty good circle of core players that are always looking to help out new players!
