I just wanted to start a thread so that anyone who felt so inclined could give a POSITIVE message about why they love DGB.

I'll start:

1) DGB got me into disc golf and showed me what an orginized group of like-minded individuals can do when they put their heads together.

Haha...you rock Ralph. By the way I've got a disc of yours (valk i think) via Chris M., let me know how I can get it to ya.

As far as the people here in Birmingham, they're awesome. Considering some of the obstacles they've had to overcome locking down two great courses in this area with 3 more on the horizon is just awesome!

Justin I imagine these three mach baskets on the horizen...drool.....what I love about disc golf is it is a great way to meet new folks and get my wild dogs lotssss of exercise and me a little exercise in the outdoors rather than some stupid gym. BTW they frown on beer at the gym:D

I love the stories from the older players who paved the way for us to have this club ;)

Hey Jebb, Here's a story for you.

When I first layed out Hole 16 at GW, there was no pavilion, and I had several really cool hole placements planned. The primary placement was going to be in the general vicinity of the west edge of the pavilion.

As you know, we started with Hole 1 (Thanks Innova) and raised money over the years to fund the other holes. We eventually raised the money for basket 16 and I went out one day to dig the hole, to find the building pad area for the pavilion graded. I had discussed the course area with the City and was not aware of anything happening in the area, other than the playground. I asked the Park Board about the pavilion and they gave me the contact info for the contractor. When I met him at the site, we looked at the map. Apparently, he did not know north from south, because he was looking at the map upside down. :mad:The pavilion was supposed to be on the other side of the creek, between the two parking lots. Since they had already started grading in the wrong area, they decided to go ahead and put the pavilion there. I had to move hole 16 and the tee pad for hole 17 to accommodate their error.

Remind me to tell you the one about the Maintenance supervisor chasing down his workers with a tractor.

Great Thread.

I have always appreciated DGB (past and for-sure present) for 2 things.

* Honorable caretakers of what makes the game possible -- THE COURSES! Taking care of GW, installing Civitan. Hard work, seldom thanked. But, it has made all the difference in golf in the Ham. Too many clubs/players just want to play or run tournaments, but not DGB.

* Genuine concern for the new or visiting player. Great ambassadors, fun to play with. Self -involved jerks are easy to find in a lot of places, but not in DGB!!

And to jump on Joe's history lesson. WoW Joe! I have always admired what you and the original crew did to put in GW. The work, the design, the whole package. Continued thanks.

Great people who just get out and do work on their own. Ralph has the # 5 party area under control, along with lot's of other help. DB just put in some climbing ropes on 17.
Bill makes things happen wherever he goes. Then there are all the great people involved with " Friends of the Park".
Probably the thread that keeps it all together is this super cool web site.
Thanks to Justin and Jebb.
I could go on, but my shoulder is still hurting from Huntsville.

There are not enough letters in the alphabet to describe how I feel about B'ham and dgb.

I gave up a job that payed great but sucked the life out of me for lower pay and the chance to live and play dg with some of the greatest people I have ever met.

The nicknam Buddha really does fit for Tom. He has not only been a great friend but a true mentor to the game. How many people get to play with a 13 time PDGA world champion who wants nothing more than to give back to the game.

Justin, Jebb and the rest of dgb are just the icing one the cake when it comes to making dg more a lifestyle than a game.

Thanks to everyone in B'ham for your friendship. I hope that I can give back to you as much as I get from everyone here.

I LOVE YOU MAN.:o

For those of you who haven't been out this week, there is a big improvement all around the bulletin board and new mulch under the practice basket. Thanks to my new best friend at the Horticulture and Urban Developement Dept. They are the same ones who fixed up # 1 a few years ago. They should get to the #5 limb this week.
Thanks for the kind words Bill. I really like to coach players that "get" it. I'll be happy when DGB sweeps all events, all divisions. WE have the talent and the passion.

Why love DGB?
Tim, Tom, Joe, Bill, Justin, Lily, Ron, (and all the other names you've heard out there over the years who gave and give still)
Any stranger playing is just a friend you haven't met yet.
out of state players who thrill at discovering GW
Beautiful landscape...birds, trees, water, wind, sunshine and dogs being dogs, squirrels being scared.
People who care enough to give, seldom take, always teaching, learning and sharing.
Whenever volunteers drop the ball, someone picks it up, guides the course, the tournament or cleanup.
Exercise, tranquility, personal growth or just peace.
