just started playing last week but i have been to GW about 3 times since. today i noticed some holes that i had not seen before. they are on the back nine around 14 and 15. i didnt see any tee boxes, just the holes. how many holes are on that hill over there and where are the tee boxes?

ah the enchanted forest (as we call it).
after 14, walk up the hill and look for the orange blocks of wood. thats "A". there are six holes in there.
A goes from near the basket of 14 towards green springs.. you best shot at a birdie in the forest
B's tee is towards green springs and goes down the hill parallel to the road. say hello to the dry creekbed for me (assuming you make the mando)
C is past the basket of B, and across the bridge. it goes back up the hill away from green springs.
D to the right of C's basket. it goes back up the hill also
E is back down the hill towards the parking lot. its got a mando that makes me mad.
F is along the parking lot. i refer to this hole as the "anklebreaker" because of all the sweetgum balls.
then its back to 15. the forest is fun...trussville lite, maybe.
"B" and "E" are quite nasty. look out!
are you making fun of the mando signs or is this some term I just dont know about???

thanks. i just had to google "mando" to figure out what you were talking about. that sign near 15's tee makes more sense now.
if you see a tall skinny guy wandering through the woods over there do me a favor and point me to the next tee box.

Those holes are all natural pads. The park wouldn't let us cement them, so thats why it may be hard to find the boxes. The first time you play those holes I suggest you go with someone who's played them before so you don't get lost

jebb: huh? i don't know what you mean. Probably.
bham: I don't really understand the one on 15... I think it was when the basket was to the left for the tourney. There was one on 18 that hasn't gone back up (and since they've had time to replace it and haven't I am about to stop abiding by it).
I agree with Tiger, it took me a couple of times to know where the holes were in the forest. They are very fun though and 24 holes is always better than 18.

Yeah, the one of 15 is for the far right position. When the hole is in that position people had a tendency to throw over the top of 14's tee box! About half the mando's you will see at courses will be for safety (the one on 18 is to keep you from whacking someone on 10). Occasionally you sill see them for difficulty (ala the double tree mando on B).
bhamlawyer, you should check out our Sunday Doubles. It's an informal mini tournament just for fun. Its a great way to meet some of the other local players and you'll get a chance to play with some of the better players in town. Its amazing what you can learn from just watching a few of the pro's throw! We'll be at George Ward this Sunday at 1:30.
jebb: huh? i don't know what you mean. Probably.
ok, I get it now.

My initial impression is that it was a leftover sign from a Spanish family reunion or something :D

.
That one keeps getting ripped down by people who refuse to try and throw anything other than big wide hyzer shots. If you want to take it just be aware of people playing hole 10, because personally if I'm on 10 and I see a disc coming from 18's tee along that hyzer route, I am NOT afraid to break or steal a disc :D

i hear you about 10. and if its SUPPOSED to be there, then i'll play like it is. I just assumed its not since it hasn't gone back up.
i would do nothing to incur the wrath of tiger, because he can throw a disc into next week.

it seems like it would be a lot of fun, but i am not very good and i would hate to ruin someone elses round.

doubles is really simple. the way we do it we try and match up teams to be fairly even. If we have a lot of players of varying skill levels we'll pull cards (like a normal playing deck) to see who gets the same card with one set for "amatuers" and one set for "pros" (am and pro is relative to who plays). If the players are fairly even its a completely random draw. Its very rare that there is just one team that is phenomenal. Simple best shot rules, very casual, so if you have any questions about standard gameplay you can just ask your group or they'll correct you without penalty. Otherwise its just a great way to meet new players, play with some of the pros and learn and improve your golf game. I strongly suggest playing.

i will try to make it this week. i have one more week of studying before the bar exam so i may or may not have time this week, but i will definitely try. does it alternate every week between GW and trussville?

Yes this Sunday is at GW. BTW, we have over 50 pin placements for those 18 holes. Some of them have been damaged so we are constantly doing upgrades.
Suggest you buy a "bagtag". That money helps out with the course repairs etc. The challange thing is lot's of fun also.
Hope to see you out there soon.

are there different discs for girls and guys, or do girls just use lighter discs? i was thinking about getting a couple discs for my wife and letting her give it a shot. may be easier to get out of the house to play if she is coming along too.
also, i have seen several people will little "mini-discs" out there, what are those for?

getting the wife out can be key in saving your game . As far as what discs to get her, yeah women usually just throw lighter weights. Tom can show in the right direction there. The little mini's that you see people use are for marking the lie. Similar to ball golfers who put the little pin in the green disc golfers use mini's

You hit the nail on the head, the weight is the important factor. The lighter the disc (generally) the easier it is to throw. There are discs available that are in the "150" class (150g or less) but they aren't generally available at retail stores. Get in touch with Tom Monroe if you want to pick up a few!
And Jeremy (Tiger) hit the nail on the head with doubles. It's all about the fun, no one minds getting a new player as a partner because its a chance for them to help a player along just like they were helped when they started playing.
Yeah, Mini discs are just markers. They aren't necessary for play, but players prefer to use them in tournaments because it gives a few extra inches on your putts!

 How dow mini's give you a few inches on your putts. I don't use them so explain how they are used if you get closer to the basket. I need to get as close as possible.:D

Haha...ok...here goes my best explanation....
Basically, when you walk up to your disc. The front edge of your disc is the point that you have to stay behind. In casual play you will often see players flip a disc over so that the back edge of the disc is now the point you have to stay behind. However, that is technically against the rules.
In the PDGA rule book it states when you step up to your disc (where it is laying after your throw) you have two options for your next throw. You can leave the disc laying in its place and throw from BEHIND it or you can place a mini at the front edge of your disc (in the direction of the basket) and then pick up your disc. Then you throw from the back edge of your mini. So basically you are now gaining the "width" of the disc closer to the hole. Hence why players use a mini in tournaments. :)

Don't worry about asking questions. All of us were at one time, in the position that you are in now. Just don't let anyone on the course know what your Message Board ID is and you can say things to people like "Can you believe that so-and-so didn't know what 'throwing a beef' was?":D
ps: Only a select few will know this term.

i could always just start making up terms of my own. something like "aww man, caught a hangnail!" or "boy, you really catted that one!".

If you get to throwing too much beef it will stick with you. You may even over compensate by over chickening.

I knew I could get the low down from y'all. I am going to Tennessee to Munford to play somr disc golf with my little brother. He has a number of courses an hour or less from his house. Course he is not far from Memphis and Tunica so we will hit those places as well.
Have a Good Weekend,
