Heh, I was just bitching to Jebb about those earlier. I've setup 6 of them in the last two days. They're nice cell phones, just not all that usable for business. I had to refuse one until the ActiveSync to work (so i can get my email/contacts/calendar on my phone).

Curious what you mean by "business". I assume you mean corporate environments that are slaves to the microsoft machine. It works great for my business. :)
I wouldn't mind having one, but never first gen. Soon enough there will be plenty of good apps for it though. 12GB is also a bit small on storage as well.
I can't wait to see the look on the first user in my office who comes up and asks if they can get one, because right now I'd have to say no dice simply because iTunes has NO place on a corp network (amongst other glaring reasons such as limited email functionality/compatibility).

What's that old saying? "No one ever got fired for buying Microsoft/Cisco."
I am indeed stuck in a M$ environment. Being a primarily *nix user it pains me to say it but with MS & exchange it's the best personal information management suite you can get right now. Pair that with ActiveSync and a nice smartphone and you've got yourself a pretty powerful mobile business platform. I can be sitting at lunch and have my calendar update with my 1 o'clock appointment, which i can click and receive a map with driving directions via Live! Maps, all from my smartphone.
I hope they get ActiveSync or some 3rd party solution working for the iPhone because it _could_ do all those things, and probably do them better (or at least much prettier..haha). I've been able to get the damn things working with IMAP4/auth SMTP but that means I'll need to poke unnecessary holes in my firewall, which I hate doing.
WHY STEVE WHY DID YOU NOT JUST SWALLOW YOUR PRIDE AND LICENSE AND WIDGET ACTIVESYNC.

limited how? I have never used a crackberry. I find the idea of a 100 key phone really unpleasant.

key words: old saying. =) With the exception of routers, we are Cisco free thank god. We use HP switches and F5 traffic managers. We only use Cisco routers because the service providers crap themselves if you mention hooking up their lines to another device.

Ah, we only use IMAP and SMTP auth. Except for one POP hold out that I keep trying to force onto IMAP. From my memory (been a while), Exchange server is a bare bones IMAP server. I can imagine you don't like having to deal with it.

i think he's referring to the lack of any sort of push email.
justin's last post could have been in Portugese, though. I'm not sure.
If it wont sync info with Outlook we can't use it. We have a rather large 3rd-party web-based contact management program which syncs into outlook, then outlook syncs the info into our handhelds.
edit: also, it will be a cold day in hell before iTunes gets installed on any of our workstations.

You guys have to see my new flux capacitor! Really cool, however, my battery keeps dying. Figures with 1.21 Gigawatts it requires to run it...
pfffft. get with the times man, flux capacitors are so 1980s plus 1.21 Gigawatts aint what it used to be.

And I thought the people camping in line in Seattle for the new iphone were crackheads. They arent speaking Portugese, that is clearly either reptilian or the language that the aliens from scientology speak. Lets break wheel monkeywrenchers.

Your prayers have been answered Justin.
"There are a lot of things enterprise customers have told us that have hold us back from being HUGE in the enterprise. What do they want to take the iPhone into the enterprise. What do they want? Push email -- huge request. They want great calendar integration. They want it pushed to them wherever they are.
"They want push contacts, global address list, Cisco IPsec VPN, they want authentication and certs, enterprise class WiFi (WPA2 / 802.1x), security policies, enterprise configuration tools, and they want remote wipe.
"That's a long list of important features enterprise customers want. Well, I'm excited to be the one to tell you today, we're doing ALL these things in the next release of the iPhone software."

_Finally_. Now I only have to fend off these iPhone guys until June when it gets released.
I'm wondering if that June release isn't going to coincide with the iPhone w/ 3G.
My three requirements for switching to an iPhone, after carrying one for a couple weeks, are 1) Activesync -check! 2) 3G -june? 3) bluetooth or USB tethering for internet access.
They're getting close to selling me!

3G -june?
AT&T's web site said for a brief moment the other day that "Data services are only available on EDGE or 3G iPhones". So, yeah, you gotta figure that is coming.
As for tethering, I agree. My boss uses his blackberry for that. I have a Verizon EVDO card.
hah, you could just get a Palm Treo 755 and already be EV-DO rev. A as well as all the corporate connectivity you would ever want.
(I know, we've already been through this discussion lol)
I still dont want iPhones on my network if iTunes is required. Last thing we need is to get sued for illegal mp3s on user PCs (you know its inevitable).

Yeah, the iTunes argument is a very valid one. I just happen to have lost that argument a LONG time ago....lol.

So, Windows Media Player is not allowed either?
Not really the same unless the user owns a zune (I only know one person with a zune and it was a gift).
I have WMP locked down pretty hard with group policy (and my firewall policy kills all streaming media and P2P to ensure bandwidth for cross-site realtime replication). I also run scripts regularly to seek out and move anything ending with .mp3 and .wma onto an admin-only 'quarantine' share for inspection (since not all digital media files are illegal).
Hopefully the policy tools that Jobs is talking about are for all us BOFH types who want to lock iTunes down to syncing only with outlook and nothing else. ;)

I think locking down iTunes is impossible. The best we can do is to ensure that pirated music isn't retrieved on our network. Blocking BT/P2P is our route. If a user brings in a CD of pirated music we don't really address that.
It's all about that plausabile denalability, heh.
It's all about that plausabile denalability, heh.
I'm pretty certain all the grannies who got sued because their grandkids downloaded mp3s will disagree ;)
Yeah, I'm a little paranoid because I see how the politics of the situation work out in the end ("I only had these songs on my computer because I thought it was ok since iTunes was on my PC"). The end user seldom accepts responsibility, so I just try to stay one step ahead in the game.
I do encourage people to bring in music CDs if they want to hear music, but they know quite well by now about mp3 files.
