With the registration open now (for invitees) and the open registration coming up mid July I guess its about time to start planning this trip.

I for sure want to make this. It's a close tournament...payout _should_ be great with all the added cash.

If you didn't get an invite (like me) and you have ANY points for the 2005-2006 season (check http://sndg.org/stats/players.php) you can signup on July 16th at http://www.msdgc.com/register/products.asp?id=10

Apparently there is a good chance this thing will fill up quickly so I'd recommend signing up that day online.

The host hotel is Best Western Ashbury, the room rates seem fair and include a "full" breakfast each day. But we might be able to shop around and find something better.

tandard Double/Standard Kings (face away from the Atrium and Pool) $64/night
Deluxe Doubles/Kings (face the Atrium/Pool) $72 night
Suite Double/King (face Atrium with livingroom and kitchen) $96/night

I'd be interested in knowing if the Suite Double has a pull out couch in the living room.

I'd probably want to leave sometime Thursday and play the courses on Friday. That or take a trip down a couple weekends before.

Josh's Guide to the AM Courses

USA: Prostyle course. OB on most holes. Water on 2 holes. Swamp on 2 holes. Numbers of Thumbers/Tomahawk holes: 0. Does not favor righties or lefties. Similar to Redstone.

Muni: Depending on the set up it can be as long as UAH or very similar to George Ward. First 6 holes are birdy hole in the shorts. Number of Thumber/Tomahawk holes: 1. Very open. OB on several holes. 5 water holes (if creeks count).

Chickasabouge: North Mississippi style course. Short and very tight. Very little OB. Number of Thumber/Tomahawk holes: 17.

Chickasaw: It used to be a shorter GW. They change this course frequently. I haven't played it in over a year.

a thumber or tomahawk is a throw using a baseball or football throwing motion with the disc released away from vertical causing it to corkscrew but fly fairly straight. Its a pretty easy throw to master for beginners and useful to get you out of trouble. Josh is a master from what I hear ;-)

play 3 or 7 at george ward enough and you will learn how to do one.

(unless you're driving past those trees)

Jeff,

Never ask the Hilltopper about the thumber unless you REALLY want to know. Basically the thumber is an overhand throw with your thumb on the inside of the rim of your disc using a curve ball type downward wrist snap at release. The amount of snap determines how much S curve you get. The opposite throw is a Tomahawk. It is thrown with your index and long fingers on the inside of the rim. A traditional thumber will be thrown high into the air, break left quickly and then turn back to the right. It should land straight where you aim. The tomahawk breaks right and then back left.

That's the basic shot but there are different types: thumbers with rolls, thumbers without rolls, wide arc thumbers, narrow thumbers, uphill thumbers, epic thumbers (i.e. double barrell roll thumbers), knuckle thumbers, low throw thumbers, distance thumbers, tee off thumbers, upshot thumbers, wind effect thumbers, and also their tomahawk variations.

I can throw about 250 feet with a regular thumber/tomahawk. I can throw 300 feet with a roller thumber with a slight uphill lie. I can throw the epic 300 feet if I am in the right position. Mountain Man from Nashville can throw up to 400 feet. They are very good for short narrow fairwayed courses like Tishimingo or Chickasabouge. At GW, I have birdied 1 short and medium, 3 medium, 4 short, 11 in both short positions, 12 medium, 13 short, 17 short, and 18 medium throwing an overhand shot off the tee.

If you do decide to truly embrace the thumber, be prepared to suffer many indignities from anti thumber types like Kris Allen. Know that you will confuse half the players you play with. If you love it though, you will always have an out of a bad lie and you can impress non players.

Oh yeah, be prepared to be called things like "thumber boy."

Don't forget guys, If you're intersted in going to this the open signups start on MONDAY and might fill quickly!

I'm in for sure, I'd love to get a few more locals in to cut down on room cost. If not i might end up having to stay with some of those Huntsville houlagans.

Just finished the order with DGA ... it's official: The top of the line baskets for Am prizes as outlines further up the forum will be Mach III portables.

Also there will be either a Proline Squall or Tsunami in every player's pack.

I will be finishing up an order with Discraft this week for additional player's pack materials including another disc and a full color mini with the tournament logos hotstamped on them.

The player's packs are shaping up to include at a minimum:

DGA Proline Disc w/ tournament logo
Discraft ESP line Disc w/ tournament logo
Discraft Full Color Mini w/color tournament logo
Millenium coupon - buy one get one free
T-shirt w/ tournament logo and sponsors

Innova & DGA stickers, good stuff to eat (junk food), full-color player's catalog and more coupons and brochures and infor and surprises than you can shake a stick at.

Ams tee anytime from 2-5 pm at University of South Alabama (bring your own partner - $20 per team) ... Check in from noon to 9 at the host hotel

Justin,

Got a partner yet?

Sivadenyaw

Major, Viktor & Justin-

If we are the only ones going from the 'Ham, we should figure out partners between us and play in the doubles.

As i've never seen any of the courses before honestly i'm not to intrested in playing doubles. I'd rather spend that time checking out some of the other courses. I'm sure i'll catch you guys at Sunday doubles between now and then though and we can talk about it...

We're only talking about one round at one of the courses, WHICH you'll need to check out. If you want, we can all try to go down real early and I'll be glad to show you around any or all of the courses.

:o Sorry Michael and Vik. I wasn't implying above that I didn't want to partner with either of you two. I just didn't notice your names when I browsed the list of registered players. I would be an idiot not to want either of you as a doubles partner.

Won't be in town this weekend. Maybe I'll see you guys next saturday or sunday, August 19-20.

That does make sense.....maybe that's the best idea, play/walk a couple courses early and catch doubles that afternoon. We'll work it out between now and then..

Good News guys. I played in the southside Kickoff last weekend and I played in a group with Cecil the man responsible for Chickasaw park. For talking with hm through the round it sounded like he was going to be putting asphalt on more if not all of the tee pads that were/are dirt. But the Course is in great shape. Beware of 18.... don't leave it short or it's going for a swim.

Good luck at southern nationals.

I see Justin, Michael, Viktor, Thomas & myself as the DGB AM reps going to Mobile. I'm going to save you guys the tough decision of which one of you get to partner with me during the byop (bring your own partner) doubles at USA. My cousin from New Orleans has asked me to be his partner. Sorry :( .

However, I'm still game for going down Thursday night and starting to warm up on a couple of courses early Friday morning.

We can talk this weekend and start making final plans.

Birminghamians going to Mobile,

You guys got plans on when you're going to drive down and/or where you are going to stay? Also, did you work out your doubles partner strategies?

Like I think I said up-post, I'm leaving Thursday afternoon/evening. I'm staying with my bro & sis-in-law. They live about 5 minutes from Muni and about 10 from USA. There may be some extra room (deffinitely places to unroll a sleeping bag) for anyone interested.

What's up?

Justin L

Vik and I have a room at the host hotel to serve as party central. We're planning on driving down early Friday morning. Michael is staying with Mike "Worm" Young and may or may not be riding down with us.

I've been working so much lately i haven't even really got to talk to anyone about it.

Sivadenyaw

I want to go down Thursday night but I have to work until 10. I might go down anyway. If not, I will leave early Friday morning.

Richard- I might take you up on the offer of a place to stay. I need to get in touch with a guy I ran into at the course last week. I will let you know. I would like to hook up on Friday for practice and doubles. We still need to talk about partners.

hey Guys, what happened, how did everyone do, who won what, Pro's Am's, did Brad get in trouble? What happened to Dean? Not much from the "official" site. No updates last night. Must have been too much party to type.
We actually had about 7 teams for doubles and then Bill broke out the cold watermelon.
Sat. Kris had a challange with Jerermy. Bill and I played along. Fun round.
I'll be out after lunch Labor Day/Monday to take Ace Race sign ups etc.
Almost 30 already, plus a few more bag tags are in for next Sat. See ya'll.
